If you only get one go with satellite radio. Make sure you get Sirius though because XM sucks. Both would be ideal. Though the alpine adapter is cool, it is not necessary as long as the head unit has A/V inputs. There is a cord that goes from headphone jack on one end, to red/yellow A/V inputs on the other, and you can just use that for the iPod. That's how I hook my iPod up to my car. It's much cheaper, the cord is only like $6.

Just a suggestion.

I have an Alpine head unit with XM and an Alpine Ipod interface. I listen to XM alot more than I use my Ipod.

ps- XM definitely doesn't suck. O&A party rock.

I have sirius with an alpine deck and Sirius antenna adaptor, so no separate ugly satelite radio unit.

Sat radio is ideal for those that are too lazy to get really into music. You dont have to pay for songs, figure out which ones you want, download them, organize them, blah blah blah. If your into that though, I would just burn them on discs. THe alpine decks can read MP3s.

IMO, Ipods in the car are only for people that, for whatever reason, need THOUSANDS of songs at their fingertips at any given time. Me, I couldnt think of several hundred songs to save my life, so the Ipod wasnt for me.

Here is the the difference between xm and sirrus:

xm has better units because they are way ahead of sirrus when it comes to their portable units. They have a good channel selection.

sirrus portable units suck! Really bad. Their signal quality is ok depending on where you are from. They have a much better channel selection and more variety it seems...

so it is really up to you, personally I have xm because sirrus signal sucks where I am from and I only listen to about 10 channels total and the ones I like are on XM. I also dont have to pay for any service from XM.....so there you have it

go for satellite radio over the ipod...

ive had both, xm was by far the worst. i love my sirius unit, so much so that i dropped the 500 bones for the lifetime subscription. siruis has everything going for it right now. i do agree with kmcconn9 about the portable units, and the such, but my sirius sportster works really well with the stock head unit.

also, if ur into sports at all, xm has nascar and mlb. have no clue why on earth they got the nascar license when its freely broadcasted on many many am and fm channels, and mlb isnt really interesting to listen to on the radio.

siriuis on the other hand, has, ncaa, nfl, nba, etc etc. there also getting howard stern, completly uncensored starting in january... xm has opie and anthony.... not even close.

sirius also has the 24hour maxim channel which is absolutly hillarious!!!!

i mean, its really all about ur prefrence, but sirius has the best variety of channels and music out there.

on a side note, im not sure how kmcconn9 gets away with no paying, lol, (must be nice) but most everyone has to pay for the monthly service.... just my thoughts

good luck on ur decision... (on a side note, if ud like a picture of how i have my siruis unit installed in the car, lemme know, i did it myself, only took 20 mins, and the wires are completly hidden for the most part )

/\ yea I agree with everything you said. Like I said before in my previous post. It is completly going to be up to the individual on which service is best for them, because people like different stuff.

Yes, everyone has to pay for it, but I have found myself in that place where Neo from the Matrix found himself in Matrix reloded.....and for some reason I dont get charged.

I guess that would depend on how many songs you have on your iPod. If I put mine on random play I wont hear the same song for at least 10 days!!

I use my iPod via a front input jack on my deck. I am sure one of the Alpine interfaces would be better tho.

If you do go with iPod, you will definately want to stay away from the FM transmitters that play the iPod through the radio. For many ppl, this works great, but if you drive over any distance, you'll find yourself constantly searching for a good unused frequency to transmit on. Also, the sound quality and clarity is much better if you can input the iPod signal via the headphone jack, or the dock.

Sorry I cant comment on XM/Sirius - dont have em, not interested.

Well, I'd say it depends on your music-listening habits.

With the Ipod, it is unavoidable that you have to have/own the music, convert it, upload it to your ipod and so on. So if you don't have time to faff around with all that, you'll end up with the same music on your ipod forever (a bit like me).

With XM/Sirius, the music you listen to is more spontaneous. But it is more of an unknown quantity but variety would be 100000% greater than your ipod.

I had XM on a car I borrowed for 2 weeks. It's wicked. I'm from Thailand, so I didn't know it was Satellite radio till I got home!!

satellite radio over ipod.

The install is fairly easy. You will have a roof mounted antenna that will need to connect to a receiver. Depending on where you mount your antenna, the receiver can be mounted appropriately. I put my antenna next to the factory antenna on the back of the roof, and mounted the receiver in the trunk, where the newer supreme radio package (or whatever it's called) mounts the factory sub. From the receiver, you'll need to run a cable to your head unit in the dash. Really, if you've done any routing of wires under the carpet for amps or speakers, you can do this install just as easily.

What's the quality of music when tying your ipod in through your head unit with a/v jacks? I mean, satellite radio is a digital signal, crystal clear with very good resolution. I would think the ipod hookup would lose some sound quality.
