2nd, 3rd shift noise
2nd, 3rd shift noise
I searched and found that there were several threads to do with "whining" noises. Only found one that was close to this and went unanswered. My 05 just started at cold weather making a whine noise when shifting into 2nd and 3rd. This noise only happens as I release the clutch when decelerating. After the clutch is completley released, whine stops. Does not do it on upshifts, and never when the cluth is in. I know there are several whining noise when deceleraing, with AWD, but this only happens as the clutch is being released on a downshift. The RPMs are typically coming up to 2.5-3.5K as the noise comes in as the clutch is released. No harsh vibrations, poppings of any kind, just an unsual whining as the clutch begins to grab (and does not do this all the time). Only 6K miles and no other unusual tranny sounds. From what I read on the other threads, sounds like another normal Evo noise, and is possibly coming from the throw out bearing. Has anyone had this specific noice diagnosed, and if so what was the problem. In the mean time, I will just get some cheese for my whine. Thanks.
Just as a follow-up, had warm weather today and I only heard it one time very brief going into second. It is hard to describe the noise, I would almost say it is not a whine, almost like an electronic noise, but it is mechanical noise from clutch. I'm not that concerned since I have no other problems, just curious if any were hearing same. Thanks.
resurrecting an old thread instead of making another..
My car for the last 2k miles (i'm at 14k now) started doing this. hillbilly explained the noise and motion perfectly, its exactly what i'm getting now. Seems like after the car is hot and been driving a while, downshifting mostly from 4th to 3rd i am getting that weird noise.
some info on mine:
My car, at 7k, had to have the 2nd gear and tranny rebuilt by mitsu. 3k later started getting the 'death whine.' Took back and they replaced transfer case and re-flushed and inspected the tranny. They said possible fragments from the tranny got in the tcase causing the damage from the 2nd gear issure. Both instances were expensive but completely covered by warranty even with my engine mods
but they also said if i install an aftermarket clutch all trans warranty would be voided
so i'ma be with the factory clutch for a while...according to their numbers they've put around 8 grand worth of parts between my tranny/tcase.
So do we have any more data on this subject. I searched and found a few other cases, but no real dealer/expert opinions on the subject.
I've never been to a 1/4mile, never auto-x, just enjoy it around the city. Not my first clutch car by no means either. I even refuse to launch it so i dont prematurely wear out the clutch. So i'm really surprised i've had as much trouble as i'm having with it.

mine is kinda making the humming whine noise a lil but it's doing the grabbing when your downshifting from 3rd to 2nd it's really wierd you can't do your normal slow down with engine braking because the clutch starts grabbing. Clutch has over 1,000 miles on it since we just put another motor and clutch in my car.
everything is brand new. I'm going to have a friend look at it hopefully within the week
