Problem with low boost
Problem with low boost
I bought a car that had a boost controller and SAFC previously. The car currently has cams, cam gears, 680cc injectors, downpipe, stock exhaust, stock cat and intake. I thought it just needed a boost controller so I installed a HMBC and while I was at it a MR DV Valve. The boost controller had no effect, 12psi still! My question is will a reflash fix my problem? There is also a service engine light on, says it is bank one sensor. Hopefully someone here will be able to point me in the right direction. Thank you.
make sure your stock solenoid is out of the mix completely....if it's still in loop...your car will put you in soft limp...
bank 1 if i'm not mistaken is your primary 02 sensor taking a dump....maybe from all that fuel and no tune.....dunno 02 sensor is right off the turbo in the 02 housing

This is very common when people purchase used Evos that used to have MBCs. You are seeing 11-12psi, because that is base wastegate pressure, which means your boost control system isn't doing anything at all. When you said you added an HMBC, what does that mean? I've never seen the "H" before. Also, what was installed before? Was it the stock boost lines going to the stock boost control solenoid? When you installed the new MBC, did you use completely new lines and properly connect everything? I'm certain this is an easy fix, but you will need to give me all the details and takes pics if you can...
You will definitely need a Dynoflash to get your car running properly overall, but for now you need to get the boost issue fixed, then get a TBE (Megan 3"). Keep the intake stock, and the rest is good. I can't imagine how awful your car is running right now with injectors, cams, stock exhaust, and who knows what kind of tuning, if any. It always baffles me how dealerships accept Evos that are all jacked up, yet people still buy them all jacked up.

....keep us informed with the boost situation
oh... HMBC ...probably means "Hallmann MBC"
Warr,
I bought the car from the auction because I am a dealer. Anytime you are buying from the auction you are taking a lil bit of a risk. The car was traded in at a Subie dealership with the loping, Service engine light on. The dealer went to a local tuner to have it fixed up then decided to "let the new buyer fix it". This is coming from the tuner. The car is near perfect condition so I am very happy with it.
I am going to search the net for an exhaust system today, any recommendations? My needs are something that won't make my ears bleed
. My buddy went with all Perrin stuff, I would like to not spend as much if possible. I am also looking at a reflash really soon! I see Works has one Dynoflash as well, any difference? Noobie help please
. I know S2k's I just don't know the Evo's near as well. Thanks once again!

If there is a metal peice inside of it, go buy some hose the same diameter and trim it to fit. Should fix the prob. If not, let us know. Also, as far as exhaust, it depends on what type of sound you want, because most of them make the same power(3" tbe make similar power, just diff. sounds). If you are looking for a "quieter" exhaust, Buschur makes a great one, AMS and a few others. Just search it and I gaurantee youll find what you are looking for. If the cel is on, and you have heavy loping, you might want to check the cam angle sensor. This could be the issue, but then again it is used, so it could be one of 1 million things. Dynoflash is one of the most often used flash, as well as Turbotrix and others. Again it depends on what you are looking to get as far as power and driveability. Just my .02 cents.

Fran...I think you would have gotten more responses if you had posted this in another forum...but I see you already thought of that
Warr...The H in front of the MBC is for Hallman I believe. He may not have any tuning at all, since it previsouly had an AFC.

How can I get a reflash when I don't know which cams I have. He has written down 272's and 264's? I hope that's right. We took off the cam gear cover and it's not stock either. The car is starting to stumle and buck in low gears.
Well, i think your best bet is to take the valvecover off and inspect the cams.I dont know if HKS has any markings on them or not. Someone needs to know why its not boosting any higher than 12 psi. I would be a bit worried with it stumbling and bucking in low gears. Have you replaced the 02 sensor?
Can anyone local help this guy out? I know he's new to Evo's, so there has to be someone relatively close that could possibly help. I know its gotta suck to have a new car and have these problems. I can guarantee you once it all gets taken care of you will love the car especially with those mods.

I am going to see a tuner on Saturday. He seems to think one of the vacuum hoses is not hooked up properly. I am also waiting to get the title so I can find the guy that had the car last and finally ask "what mods are on this thing"
. thanks for looking out though, Quik!

You will need to get custom tuned in person, because I don't think there's any way to figure what cams are on there unless you get in touch with the previous owner. What tuner are you going to? I would only go to an expert Evo shop, although they are probably right that the boost problem is related to the vaccuum hoses in some manner or fashion (i.e., wrong hoses, hooked up to the wrong nipples, etc).
I suggest a Buschur TBE with the quiet muffler for you. Great power, very light, but not loud. As for your tuning, I always suggest Dynoflash, but you clearly need to get a custom tune, and that may just depend on who can get to you or who you can get to, because you don't want to rely on a mail-in flash.
