What does it take to shoot flames?
This question is just for the Evo8 guys. back in Oregon before I left for AZ (school) a friend had a STi that shot some good sized flames. And well still being a car guy and making the final decisions on an Evo8 I just wanted to know what it took to shoot flames.
And if you wanted to know it took the Sti a HKS SSQV, TurboBack 3" exhaust, HKS intake, and a reflash to shoot flames on down shifts and some upshifts.
Yes I know this maybe a dumb question to ask, but I do know some of the Evo owners have done it and may want to do it. So please hold the "your a dipsh1t" comments until we find out.

Dude when your shooting flames your running rich which isnt the best thing for your engine. If you want to shoot flames what dont you get a flame thrower kit.

Evo runs pig rich from the factory. Just put turbo back on it, run some race gas and try to get as much timing as you can on stock boost. I used to shoot flames with my RS when I was running 104. But I was dyno tuned. I used to be able to hear it.
Well the reason your friends STi was shooting flames is because hes running a VTA bov i know hks ssqv wont recir on the tmic setup. Anyways what happends after he shifts all that air is metered by the maf sensor and when the bov opens all that air is left out so the computer cant account since its programed to think its still recirulating and thats what causes the super rich condition.

Okay, I just got a test pipe today. I'm running an invidia turbo back. The thing is I have an HKS SSQV recirculating. Can I still shoot flames? Do you just WOT and release the gas to let the flame shoot? What rpm range do you see this? Will I burn o2 sensors?
Somewhat rich tune + red hot exhaust - catalytic coverter = flames.
There are other ways to get it done, but for the most part, it helps to have those 3...which means getting the headers/downpipe worked up pretty hot. Running a VTA BOV to the equation adds a definite FnF element.
