Info: Cars and Engines

Hey everyone.

I have been here for a while (just recently registered though), haven't posted much, more of a lurker.

I am bout to get my Evo, but there is a problem I would like to see if you guys could address:

I haven't been around cars my whole life, I have been getting serious about them for about 8 months now, and frankly I do not know much at all about them (what little I do know is attributed to howstuffworks.com).

I have been to howstuffworks.com and read up on all of their articles on how engines work, but frankly it does not go in enough detail and I am left with the very basics by the end of the article.

I search the forums, but most if not all of the posts here are meant for people with understanding on how everything works and what it does inside of the engine and the rest of the car.

Basically what I am trying to get from everyone is could you guys point me to a good source of information I can read up on about cars/engines in general and the 4g63t? I am about to buy an Evo, and frankly I want to know everything that is going on with my car, what it is doing and how it is doing it. If something breaks I don't want to be standing there completely oblivious on what to do, I want to be able to know exactly what happened after analysis of the problem and be able to fix it.

I am sure you guys can understand where I am coming from, I have done the most searching I can on the forums, but I still don't know what is going on. I have no one to teach me and point out everything on a car and what it does exactly and I have no one to teach me about the internals of the engine and what is going on so I thought I would ask you guys if you could give me some information. If you guys could point me in the direction I need to go in order to learn about everything that is involved with a car (including electrial/wiring engine internals etc.) and with the 4g63t that would be much appreciated.

Thanks alot for the help everyone.

Well, i can't say I know where you're coming from. I've been around DSMs for 8 years, and I couldn't tell you how the engine works. It's definitely a pre-requisite for owning, driving, modding, and enjoying the car. What exactly are you trying to learn? How internals combustion works when air and fuel are mixed in the cylinder or what?

Well here is my best answer I can give to that:

Everything.

I don't want to have to take my car to a shop to get everything done to it. I want to do all of my own work, I am just not sure where to start. Really just need to be pointed in the right direction so I can begin to learn. Like I said I know the basics, but not the specifics, and that is what I want to know.

You can't say everything. You need to be specific.

If you don't want to be specific, then the answer to all of your questions can be found through days of searching. If you have specific questions, I can answer some or point you directly to the answers.

Yeah I can understand how that is a hard thing for you to answer on the other side of the spectrum. That is why it is hard for me, alot of the people here understand everything that is going on with their cars, so they are already in a different position than myself.

I guess the best thing I can say is put yourself in my shoes, if you only understood the basics of cars, where would your more knowledgable self point you to in order to attain more information that would help you understand everything about your car?

It is a difficult question for me to ask, just thought I would ask it to see if I could get some help.
