Questions about camshafts

Hey all, I've searched and haven't found the results I'm looking for so here's my question. I know there are a few different options of camshafts for the evo ( 264, 272, and 280) and I know the lower profile are more towards torque and the higher profile are more for top speed. My question is: I see many posts on here of people going with a 264 272 setup or some other combinations thereof, so why use 2 different profile cams? and how do you know which cam to put on where? (ex. 264 intake and 272 exhaust).
Thanks, Cameron

as far as profiles goes, it depends on what your trying to do/want.

just a quick observation from people on here:
I/E
264/264=nice for stock turbo, concentration on mid to high-end power, nice idle
264/272=same as above, better top end, idle can be slightly ruff untuned
272/264=better low and mid, idle can be slightly ruff untuned

272/272=highest recommended for stock turbo, much better for a bigger turbo (20g, gt30+) great mid-high end power , idle ruff untuned

280/280=Awesome High end power, MUST BE TUNED or idle sucks period, typically for a purposed built race/track car, but i know theres people using them on the street.

also isnt there a theory but like:

272/264 .. the idea of using a bigger cam on the intake for the top end... and using the smaller cam for the exhuast to help spool a turbo sooner... *since 264 are better at midrange

yea i read that somewhere to, but some argue that to much air gets in and the exhaust cam cant get rid of it fast enough

I like my HKS 280/272 staggered combo with adjustable sprockets on a JDM RS turbo(like a TME). Believe it or not, with gears set at +2/0, or +1/-1, it has great lower midrange punch and extremely quick turbo spool. Right now I have them set at 0/-2, and upper midrange is great with improved topend pull.

Idle at +2/0 was rumpitty rough but at +1/-1 and 0/-2 it is less erratic. I also tried -3/-2 and -3/-3 which provide increased topend power and much smoother idle at the expense of low end torque. Sometimes I wish I'd done 272/264 instead, but overall, however, I'm quite blown away by the unexpected midrange punch of this combo with the advanced cam timing settings.

With the gears set this way, it is a bit octane sensitive at low rpm throttle tip-in. I run really crappy third world gas, so we had to pull a few degrees of ignition timing out of the low-throttle timing table.

Of course, speaking for myself, one is never totally happy, so lately I've been considering changing to either the Tomei Procams 260*, or the Piper Rally 265's, which are both higher lift cams than the HKS, and are supposed to work real well with the stock turbo. But, overall I don't regret having tried the HKS 280/272 combo.
