I experience the same noise apparently the evo makes a wide range of noises mysterious or otherwise I searched "whining noise" and deteremined by process of elimination that it was a usual noise with our cars but others have had similar noises linked to other problems like the transfer case and such. So I would suggest searching and reading all the posts linked to these noises it takes some time but it's worth it

As soon as it starts up, mine whines like a 5-year old child leaving Disney.

After the car is warmed up a bit, the whining dissapates, but is still there up to about 3500 rpm but only in the gears 1-3, both on de-acceleration and acceleration.

After searching and finding similar "whining" posts (with comments that vary from "it's normal" to " the transfer case is gone"), and going to the dealer (who says it's normal), I'm going to assume it's another Evo sound and keep track of it if it gets worse....
