First Oil Change in IX...
Hey everyone! First off, I just would like to say that I searched and searched and searched for an answer to my question and no clear answer was found...
I spoke with the service department at my local Mitsu dealership and they told me the first oil change should be done around 5,000 miles (another dealership told me 3,500).
I got the impression in one thread that it should be done at approximately 1,000 miles. Which one is it???
I currently have the original synthetic Mobil oil in my IX with 950 miles on the clock and am wondering what to do. I know the same synthetic should go in with an OEM filter too right?
Thanks!!!

It wouldn't hurt to change it as soon as possible, but it's not entirely necessary to do it this soon. I changed my oil WELL BEFORE the numbers that your local dealerships have mentioned to you. I will say that after I changed my oil for the first time, my fuel efficiency went up a tad, and I started consistently getting 20+ mpg (if that matters to you).
The reason you couldn't find a consistent answer to this is that there doesn't seem to be one
. I had my first change at 950 miles based on my old knowledge that as an engine "breaks" in, there may be small bits of metal that end up in the oil and it is good to get them out. On this site, I have read all kinds of opinions about this; break-in miles with non-synthetic oil, no need to change at 1000 miles, etc. Since you are at 950 already, it would still be my recommendation to change the oil and then every 3000-5000 miles afterward (depending on driving style/usage). Just my two cents.

There's really no dead-set rule.
I reccomend waiting 1-2k miles for the first change and don't drive it hard during this time, and keep it under 5k rpm.
After that, shoot for every 3-5k miles, more frequently if you drive it hard, less frequently if you baby it with low stress miles. Be sure to check the oil level every couple weeks to watch for consumption during the first 10k miles. Once you see trends then you'll know how often (if at all) you need to add a bit. The harder you drive it the more potential for oil ot be consumed. Some claim they see no consumption whatsoever, others will drink a quart or more between changes. (After my first change I was about 1/3 qt low, its more normal during the early miles as everything is still breaking in.)
If you track the car frequently (or at all) I'd check the oil before and after each event. For each track event, chop about 800-1000 miles off your change frequency. so if you're at 1500 miles since the last change, and that includes two track days, change it.
Them's the rules I stick by.

the dealer told me to wait, i told them to change it..... i had it done a little over 1k miles, i did it again at 3k, and will do it again at 5k. it's your car maintain it how you see fit
After break in just change the oil. It might not be completely necessary but it shows your cautious, meticulous, and care a lot about your car if you do so. I have 1050mi on my odometer and plan on changing it within the next week or two depending on my driving. If you've been driving it pretty easy you could wait closer to 2k but its just an oil change. JUST DO IT. If anything you're helping your car by changing it sooner so don't sweat it
Take a peak in your owners manual. The reason they told you 5K miles or 3500 miles is because there's two different recommended service intervals to follow. Either the regular schedule or the severe schedule. You choose one depending on how you drive your car. But knowing the average evo owner, we should all be following the severe driving schedule.
