BMW M3 vs. Evo IX MR
Stock vs. stock 0-60 is pretty much even. 1/4 mile is damn close to (IX vs. M3). But from the roll the M3 is faster. Without a launch the Evo is not going to be able to hang.
What happens on the 'street' is moot, many variables, just pick up any magazine, road test, review and the numbers are close enough.
Mods for mods, sure the Evo is going to be quicker - nothing new there.

Congrats on getting rid of the ES350 - youll be much happier with an EVO or M3 - Evo will keep you very busy, broke since performance mods and tuning are available to the moon, the M3 got the pimp factor - dumb chicks are eaaaaasily impressed which wont happen with the EVO.
Get the EVO with SSL - my vote - I'd get bored too quick with an M3.

I bought a 03 when they 1st came out, I went from a NSX to a evo and like the evo better. I drove a 06 smg comp package M3 and was thinking about it but I think I will get the new evo or a 9 when I feel I need too. I will say I have had 0 problems with my evo and I hammer it every time I can. These cares are great, dont buy into the bull**** hype If you gave me 100k to spend I would get a evo again.

Now the ///M roadster 2001+ with the S54 motor 315 hp detuned from 333hp will accelerate very comparable to the stock EVO IX, The ///M roadster is what you have to worry about.

The mcoupe is a good platform if you want to go all out also. The fastest mcoupe (4 cyl btw) runs 8.4 in the 1/4 mile.
Had an 01 M Coupe, beat the stock IX no problem. It also walked M3's.
I loved that car but IX MR made a great replacement - at least until BMW drops the V8 in the M Coupe in 2008 then I will get another one. Trust me, they will do it.

Just got rid of my M3
I used to have an imola red SMG2 e46. First off, the M3 is faster on the highway than a stock evo. At the time I also had an AMS stage2 RS. On a straight line run (5mph roll) the cars were exactly the same (RS had 2 people in it).
What really matters is that the EVO is a much better performance car. Steering, brakes, handling are all much better compared to the M3.
I rid myself of the M3 because of the following problems: 3 subframe replace ments, 2 diff replacements, 1 blown engine. The car always had problems and I was very worried about future issues.
If you want a car that impresses the girls, sounds great, performs pretty well, has an awesome engine then go with the M3. If you want a better performance car, and the ability to make a fast car even faster then go with the EVO.
There are a few M3 build months to look out for as they have issues with engine rod bearings. check this site out for more info.

U guys do know that a stock M3 vs. a stock Evo 8 or 9 M3 will win. Off the line Evo has the jump top of 2nd gear M3 walks the Evo. In order for a Evo to beat an M3 with equal drivers Evo needs to have 300 WHP. From a roll stock vs. stock we all know the M3 will whoop it equal drivers. I do know Evo's boost kicks in quick but the M3's throttle responds even faster from a roll.

I either got lucky, or i had a freak evo, but my evo would stomp my friends m3, even when i was driving the m3. Dude, EVO>M3. The only way to be sure, is to drive them both and figure out what you want more.
for those of you who say the m3 is not faster than an evo, you just dont know numbers and physicality. thats like saying 3 is greater than 4. the m3 stock for stock IS faster than an evo, you might get the jump on him or some kind of luck, but without mods an evo will not beat an m3 coupe after 80, theres just no way.
i'd go for the m3, i dont know what type of person you are, but i said similar things to myself before i bought my evo maybe 4 months ago, and now im parting it out and selling it. i made 350whp, had my fun and its time to move on, the car is a tin can, its not practical, its too noisy inside the cabin, the interior looks like garbage, and the ride is bumpy as hell. BUT i will say im not sure i will ever drive a car than handles better, no matter how fast im going im never nervous to take a turn, the thing is glued to the road.

You comments clearly show that the Evo is hardly the right car for all enthusiasts. It's not unusual to see folks opt for machines less raw than the Evo and it's understandable, as well. The Evo's advantage lies in its performance envelope, not in its interior appointments or in an overly comfy ride. I think we often see posts from folks who simply bought the wrong car for their individual needs and who would have been much happier with some of the other fine cars on the market.
Contrarily, one of the things that I personally love about the car is its sparse interior. Hell, I bought the RS that has even less amenities than the other model designations. There's actually nothing I dislike about the car other than the low-beams. They have a nice lateral spread and are aimed well, but I sure wish they'd have more reach. But, I digress. My point isn't to defend the car, but to point out that it's not necessarily the right choice to begin with.
