Question Wheel / Tire Size , Please HELP!

Ok, ok, i know this kind of thread is just beating a dead horse now but the forums are so jumbled up i cant find any solid info.

I just want to know if 17x7.5 rims with 205/40-17 tires will fit on my OZ.

I dont know anything about offset or what difference it makes so any explanation will help.

They're jumbled because of reposts. When people are too lazy to search

Due to the width they may rub on the inside when you cut the wheel. Some people rub, others don't.

I'm gonna move this to the newbie forum since I doubt any real tech info will fall into this thread. If I'm wrong, I'll move it back.

I think the consensus is that 205/40/17 won't rub unless you absolutely slam the car down (2"+). I've seen plenty of threads stating that even 215/45/17s don't tend to rub, even with about a 2" drop.

Needless to say, the 205/40 option is safe, and the 215/45 option should be ok too. Maybe go with the 205 just to be safe, having that extra half inch of width in the wheels themselves.

My 205 45 17s rub a bit when the wheel is fully turned, if that helps. By the way, I recommend Yokohama AVS ES100's to anyone looking for a tire, they are awsome.

Mine couldn't rub if I wanted them to. Same size tire on a +40mm offset.

There are some inconsistencies from car to car and wheel/tire to wheel/tire combo apparently.

offset is always measured from the center of the rim to where the rim meets the axle, so 40mm means 40mm (and will be at the same location on the car as all other rims of the same size and offset. HOWEVER, tire size is subjective. The 205 on Hobie's and Tristar's tires are measuerments taken while the tire was on a rim, but they might have been measured on different size rims, making the same results on tires that are actually different widths. Hoosier took advantage of this with their street legal road race tire. By measuring their 245 tire on a skinny 7" rim (sucks in the tire, making it skinnier and a tad larger diameter), when the tire actually measures 265 on an 8" rim But since the specs list it as 245, certain road race classes can use them even though they are getting a larger contact patch than other tire models. sneaky, huh?
