Evo Boosting.
I own both an STi and an Evo IX MR. They are both great cars but it really depends on what you are looking.
My Evo starts boosting well before 5k and in stock form it was able to run side by side with my STi which has a Cobb stage 2 mod and it could even pull a little bit on the STi in certain gears. I had the STi Protuned so for now there is no doubt on which car is faster but I'm sure the Evo will earn it's place once I start to mod it.
The STi has one very annoying thing about it that I just can't get over, especially now that I have the Evo. The gears are way too short. It has a gob of power but it seems to deliver it in short rapid bursts then yuo have to shift. With the Evo you can wind the thing up past 7k and you really feel like you are driving the car where as with STi there is only about 2k RPMs of usable power then you have to shift.
To me it's kind of like having to take a giant **** after drinking. Would you rather pee for a few seconds then try to stop and start again over and over? Or would you rather just let it all hang out and enjoy yourself? I know which one I enjoy more!

I got a IX MR and have raced STIs a lot they dont really compare bone stock. IX MR is much better plus you get the 6-speed.
STI with slight mods still can't take the IX MR.
test drive both and see which one fits you, its your investment so get the one you will enjoy the most? People can talk about how great each are but the drive is what will sell you....

This was my experience. I was torn as well between the two for 2 years until my good friend bought an STi. She let me drive the ***** off of it for about 2 weeks. Then I test drove the EVO. Lag felt about the same and the STi did have a little more torque on the butt dyno, but the STi just felt like a really quick car whereas the EVO blew my mind with its handling. Also at that time the EJ25 was only out a year whereas the 4G63 had been around forever and people knew how to get good power out of it reliabley already. Basically it comes down to what you want. The EVO looks better IMO (especially compared to the 06 Subies) and it handles much better as well. If you want power, it is easier/cheaper to get it with the 4G63 than the EJ25. As far as boost, I believe that stupid video the dealer made me watch when I bought my car said it hits full boost at 3400prm (maybe 3600). Trust me though, it has very little lag for a 2L.

No kidding the IX is better, which is why I have one. However, they don't let you test drive brand new EVOs, hence my suggestion to test the VIII.
God, do I have to justify every single detail I say on these internet boards?

You have to remember, on the evo forum of course most people will say evos are better, on the sti forum most people will say STI's are better. It's all about what you want and what you feel best about driving.
P.S. Evo's are better

Its just all about how you carry yourself.

Really, I've been on the Suby forums since early 04 and on EVO forums since late 04 and have never heard of a stock STi running 12s stock. I'm not doubting you and you dont need to find me proof, Im just surprised.

They let me flog the hell out of a used VIII though.

I just said what I said because some people have trouble gettin test drives.

STI - Peak TQ - 4000 rpm, Peak HP - 6000 rpm
EVO - Peak TQ - 3500 rpm, Peak HP - 6500 rpm.
The EVO has an extra 1000 rpms in it's fattest part of the powerband. Add that with the 5 speed vs. 6 speed and you have to shift much less to stay in the power.
But now with 500 HP at the crank on my car, even the EVO gearing gets to the rev limiter pretty quick in anything under 4th gear!
