Like EvoRSvIII said, no power options, 6 spd, or wing. But, what you do have is lighter car. What the Purist know is this will make the car more tossable or get down the track faster. Now I'm not suggesting that this is a complete and perfect package from Mitsubishi. But it is a good start for a racer on a budget.

By the way, I thought the RS had less production #'s than the MR.

Johnyracer,

If you think that the Evo RS is faster because is 80lbs lighter you are in the wrong business. Yes indeed the weight has something to do but 80lbs makes almost no difference(maybe a 1/10th quicker) now days you can regain that difference by just addind small and inexpensive mods(LICP,HF cat, CAI,$50 MBC).

Yodobashi,

and I say that off course you will find them for that price but there are many other factors like mileage, condition, location.

The MR was a special edition(1000 units imported of Evo 8 MR) and for such it would hold its value very well.

+1. The RS will not depreciate as much in dollars due to it's lower cost, but the percentage will almost be the same. I don't see why there are so many threads about resale. If you are that worried about the value in a few years, go and buy a Honda.

Also, as far as value go, I'm not just talking about resale value. What about demand later?

Here is a good example:

I remember back in the day when the 5.0 Mustangs were new and HOT. These cars were killing the stock Iroc's and T/A's from GM at stop light confrontations. These 5.0's were flying off the dealer lots (hatchbacks, t-tops, and convertibles). All were flying except the notchback. Most thought this lighter cheaper model was ugly and missing something compared to the other models. Now fast foward to the years when Ford stopped making the notch' fox body 'Stang. These are the most desirable late model stang for racers.
Do you see where I going with this? Can the RS be our "Notchback" in years to come?
Please excuse me for comparing Mitsuishi to Ford .

The numbers I saw reflected ~1,500 MRs and ~200 RS' sold in 05. I'm betting that a similarly small number of RS' was/is sold in 06, as well.

Exactly. Once we consider the effects of racing and modding, an unmolested, well-preserved RS is going to be a fairly rare beast in perhaps as little as 10 years. In terms of future value, it seems like cars go through a generational cycle (if you will). At 10 years the market sees them as dated, in 15 they begin to look cool and desirable, and in 20 the demand begins to escalate. In many ways, the RS is similar to COPO Camaros and ca. '67 Dart factory specials, and it's the RS' lack of options and race-meant demeanor that may push its value beyond that of other models. I have no plans to sell mine - actually, just the opposite - so I guess I'll be one of the few to see how this pans out.

Of course, if we're talking about trade-in value in as little as 5 years, the above flies out the window.

That's one of the reasons why I haven't gotten rid of ol' #50, my Galant VR4. Sometime in the near future I'll pick up a RS, too.

Hey FJF, don't forget about those Dodge Daytona's and Plymouth Superbird's. These cars were undesirable at first. In fact some were converted back to "regular" Chargers and Road Runners just so the dealers could get rid of them. Today, the value of these cars are crazy.

There are less RS' than MR's sold in '06. More people want the MR...supply and demand. I love my RS .

ps. Carlos...80lbs might not make a difference in drag racing but in auto-x/roadracing/etc. it can make a difference. You're saying another model can make up the difference with bolt ons but if the RS has the same bolt ons, in the end it is still 80lbs lighter. Power-to-weight ratio is what it's all about IMO. Gearing comes in handy as well but the 5speeds in '06 come fairly close up until 5-6th gear in the MR.

If my notch is going to have the value of a superbird it will stay in my garage...haha. That's great that the RS is lighter and more for the purist, but I'm going to drive the back and forth to work every day and I must have A/C and power.
Generally, we always use the rule 100 lbs. = 1/10th in the quarter...yes this may be caught up with $50 worth of mods, but do the same to the other car and it's still 1/10th quicker.

How about this? Don't buy a car with the idea that it's going to be an investment (Unless it's an Enzo).

Buy a car you are going to want to drive.
