That totally depends on what state you live in. In some states private party car sales are not subject to sales tax. Some states don't have any sales tax at all. And in some states if you trade in a car at a dealership the trade in amount is deducted from the purchase price of the new vehicle when calculating sales tax. So if your trade is worth $40k and your purchase is $50k you only pay tax on $10k.

Bottom line: Research your home state's sales tax laws.

Here in GA I ws quoted $34k for a used IX MR w/ 2000 miles. I'm getting a new one for $34,500 from another dealer. I'd think a used one would be closer to $31k. Just tell them what you are willing to pay for it and see how low they will go.

Um, unless you live in a state with no sales tax (which are very few) then there will ALWAYS be tax on a private party car sale. You'll pay it when you go to the DMV to register the car...

Please don't post misinformation like this without checking your facts. I can name two states off of the top of my head (Florida and Georgia) that do NOT collect sales tax on private party (person to person) car sales.

That would be because Florida has no tax, along with New Hampshire, Nevada, Oregon and Texas...

Wow, are you some kind of professional misinformer? You're wrong again: Florida and Texas both have state sales tax. They don't charge state INCOME tax. Georgia has both sales and income tax.

I should know, I lived in FL for over 10 years. But some guy from Colorado on teh Intarwebs knows better.

He never said that NO states tax these transactions. He said most do and he's right.

See? This is simply not the case, you need to research your home state's (and sometimes county/municipality) sales tax rules because there isn't one blanket law for all states. That's what I said way up the thread and this guy disputed that, and I showed that he is misinforming people.

Are you normally so polite? If I made an error, it wasn't because I meant to.
