Hey guys,
Im new here, I currently have a GTI 1.8T with all the bolt ons... been lookin at evo's for my next project, but I have a few questions. I know some basic stuff for JDM things, because its pretty much the same compared to euro tuning.. My 1.8T keeps up from rolls in any MPH through about 115mph, then the evo pulls ahead (he had exhaust) so I think thats pretty damn quick. anyways,
If I got an evo I'd do 3" turboback exhaust, no muffler (I have a 3" TB no muffler on my 1.8T right now and i love it), coilovers, sway bars, strut bars, etc, etc.
But my questions are:
I have read the WORKS ecu reflash is nice, but I havent found any dynos on how much they gain. Do the 4G63's react as well to chips/reflashes as much as my 1.8T? Or do I have to do standalone/piggy back for controlling boost, etc.
What coilovers are nice for evos? I currently hav B&G Coilovers on my gti, and they're awesome, and they go amazingly low. I'm used to being slammed to the ground, and I read that TEIN's are nice but they dont go too low, what are some brands to look at?
I've been reading around, but this seems more complex than my easy to mod 1.8T.
Thanks

Please do not buy an evo. Evo's aren't meant to be slammed, and coilovers can range from 800-4000 depending on how far you want to go on suspension setups. You can hit 300hp minimally with the stock turbo with the right tuning/flashes. But then again, you can search all of this up.

1. Never say JDM on here again...LMAO
2. A 3" with no muffler....um prob not a great idea for the EVO.
3. A flash from a good dtuner will give you very good gains. Look at www.jestrtuning.com and you will see.
4. Thier are lots of coil overs, depends what you want out of them. What spring rates etc and how much you would like to spend.
The 4G platform is very very easy to mod, if done right. I hang out with the V Dub guys and I can tell u my 4G is much easier and CHEAPER to mod then the dubs.

haha.. i thought when you said DTM i assumed you were a bimmer guy from www.dtmpower.net because some of my buddies are m3 owners. But you own a 1.8 liter fwd!!

p.s. search up zeal / ohlin coilovers for the evo.

2. why not? turbo cars dont like backpressure, and mufflers reduce backpressure.. or do you mean it'll be too loud, etc?
3. thanks, i'll check it out.
4. for coils, i'd like something with VERY stiff spring rates, my B&G's are 500 front, 450 rear spring rates, which is pretty high, i love it. also, i'd like something that would go really really low for shows and stuff, and i know if i go really low, it'll mess up the suspension geometry for these cars... so i'd like some that are escentially very stiff and goes low. but not break the bank, probably 2k at the most

First off, welcome to the boards.. Please use the search tool for more indepth answers, as these questions have been overly discussed.
To start off a TBE is a good idea, but why no muffler? Just curious. As for the 4g63's they respond very well to reflashes/tunes. A tune/reflash is going to yield you the most hp for dollar and is one of the most important things you can do.
I've never had any experience with the Works flash but I do know that it is a little pricey compared to others. If it were me personally I'd either go with the ECUFlash, where you purchase the $90 tactrix cable and the software is basically free. This would allow you or a tuner to access all of the stock maps and change them accordingly. If you're not into doing it yourself and would rather pay someone, I'd recommend AMS/Dynoflash as they both do reflashes fairly cheap, with nice gains. The only downside to that is if you install another part that requires the car to be retuned you would have to send your ECU back off for another reflash, whereas if you had the ECUFlash you could make the changes by just plugging up your cable.
Sorry can't really help you much with the coilovers. The _only_ suspension component I've put on mine is Hotchkis lowering springs. IMO the stance is perfect and they improved handling a bit, all for the low price of about $170.
Again, the search key is very helpful!

tactrix cable in the hands of an evo noob = certain disaster........
Um, please tell me why you want no muffler? The difference is power is minimal to non exsistent.

is the ECUFlash pretty much like VAG-COM for VAG vehicles? or is it like lemmiwinks for VAG cars, that allows you to change fuel, timing, boost, etc etc
That sounds alot easier than i thought if thats the case.

the sound is what i love. i've heard a bunch of evo's exhaust in person, and the best sound i've heard was with one with a 3" TB w/ race pipe, no resonators, but with a HKS muffler.
i'd like to keep a cat to pass inspection, and thats also one of my ways to get the sound back

Look at my sig and you'll see how much power you can get with minimal mods. I probably spent about $2500 on everything including tuning. Most of the installs were done by me and my buddies. You don't need coilovers unless you want to rebuild them every year and you like autox, track etc... Instead save the money for a new clutch and a install which will run you anywhere from $1300-$3000 depending on the clutch you choose to go with. Good luck...

Yes, if you are familiar with tuning then the cable and software is an option, but I most certainly wouldnt go that route unless you really know what your doing.
As far as SLAMMING an EVO, again prob not a great idea. The suspension in the car is ver percise as it is and lowering it works great, but slamming it probably will do more harm then good.

Lol that's why I said could be tuned by himself or someone else Originally Posted by BADEVO

Then you may want a VTA BOV and just run no exhaust too....LOL
JK
But um if thats what floats your boat, I know the Buschur EXH with the bullet muffler is scary sounding ( in a GREAT WAY ).

Sorry, I have no clue what VAG is... However, yes it does allow you to change these things such as fuel, timing, boost..Originally Posted by extol1337
