Hmmm...I was going to say get a Miata/MX-5 and boost it (all for next to nothing) and then save up for the EVO, but it doesn't sound like it would meet all of your requirements. They rank VERY high in fun, but some people don't like them due to low HP. Their performance characteristics are definitely more handling-biased.

Still -- I think everyone should own a roadster for at least a year -- it's a very unique automotive experience.

I was originally looking at buying a WRX when I realized I could afford a used low mileage evo. I would have gotten the WRX (and modded it) if I couldn't have purchased my current evo.

Old? They're still making them. The new gen puts down decent numbers. It will be interesting to see what they do with boost...

i am pretty much in the same boat as you i dont have a ton of money to spend and dont want my payments to be out of control. I was debating between a evo or a wrx, the wrx being cheaper to save money. When i look at both i realize how the wrx is a peice of junk and just about everything breaks on them. Which leads me to my conclusion, i am now in the market for a pre owned low milage evo.
Good luck.

Ohhh...good call.

No AWD, but probably the best hatch out there (assuming all goes well when they start selling them and nothing happens to make them a "dud").

Probably get an older style Impreza from 1999 or so and drop in an STi motor as I love that bodystyle.

Yeah, I think its the GC8 bodystyle (I am not very Subaru inclined lol). I would do it in a heartbeat if I didn't have my Evo.

possible alternatives if there were no Evo's (in this order):
STi
mkIV supra TT
e39 m5

can't remember other choices right now, but those 3 would be the top choices. i want something practical space/seat wise, while still have fun/versatility in performance.
