Welcome to the show!
I like your choices there. I would say go with whatver you think would make you most happy.
EDIT: We can discuss all cars here. Just some of them might incite a riot amongst some of the members,

Thanks, but due to my impoverished state, 30K is a stretch for me. I really need to get the most 'bang for the buck' so, I have lots of homework to do...
They did not even HAVE the R32 at the international auto show in NY a few weeks ago. They had a LAME-*** 20th anniversary GTI instead

all are nice choices.
my rankings:
1) Evo - obviousally
2) STi - 100% as good as the Evo, I just prefer the MMC
3) R32 - great powerplant, looks nice, excellent build quality - too soft for my liking.
4) Mini S - everything I read is positive, but I just don't like fwd cars

I'm no longer a fan of front drive either, since '98 when I got my BMW... But I am attracted to the car. It really feels like it wants to be driven when you get in. I had very high expectations of the cooper S, but was let down on my test drive.
To be fair, there WERE three people in the car, including me, so I was a bit heavy. The handling is really like a go-kart as the mags all say. It's fun, but no *****...
The works kit does more than just raise HP & Tq, it makes the delivery almost totally linear to red line, which is quite impressive to me. I really want to drive THAT car before disqualifying it.
Since it has a rear-drive type rear suspension (way over-engineered) it is quite respectable.
