Hey, some quick questions!

I just purchased a 2003 Evo with 18k miles on it. It is in literally perfect condition inside and out, but I do have my doubts about the engine. Firstly, will the warrenty cover the engine? I don't know if that is in the bumper to bumper (which expired) or the drive warrenty. Also, when you get done driving, inside the engine compartment to the right it smells like burnt rubber/superheated metal. You can also smell this at the hood's vent when the hood is closed. Any idea what that might be? I don't know the normal sound of the engine, however there is a slight ticking you can hear when outside the car. What might this be, or is that normal?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

P.S. What is the first upgrade I should look at doing, in your experience? Also, has anybody ever heard of electrochromatic glass?

id drive it for a bit first to check the engine out before modding, the warranty will definitely not be there after any mods.... but first mod, turbo back exhaust, boost controller, and flash.

The smell is normal, it's just caused by heat. That ticking is the fuel injectors, thier pretty load. have fun with the car

Sounds normal to me. I just bought a 03 with 34k on it. Ive had it for close to 3 months now and love it. That mileage is incredibly low! Good find! As far as the warranty goes. I read on here that it is transferable from owner to owner, but everything goes down. So instead of the original 10/100k you now have 5/50k for powertrain and everything else is 3yrs/30k.

Damn good mileage! I got my 03' w/10K miles back in January. The smell is normal...mine smelled for a while also, but it went away.

Not sure what the ticking could be though. How much they want for it? Any pics??

Fuel injectors make a tick when they open to deliver fuel. My first experience with that was my old Z 28 with TPI. The Evo is much louder all around. You'll hear the valves makin a lot of noise around 3500 rpm also.

Question with the burning smell. Are you running the car wide open and then shutting the car off? Or are you allowing time for the turbo to cool off before shutting the motor down?

I have not been allowing much time to cool down. It isn't like I'm getting out the second I park or anything, but I probably have not allowed more than 15 seconds to cool down. I'm not red lining it or anything though, usually if I'm having fun I get to about 6k RPM.

I bought it for 22k on ebay, which is always risky because I couldn't see the car ahead of time. Turned out great though. Here are some pictures.

The fuel injectors sounds like the obvious source of the ticking, now that you guys mention it. Should I get them cleaned or is that completely normal? It isn't like the RPMs are at all unstable, so I doubt I need them cleaned. The way you guys are talking, it's completely normal, which is cool also. I'm sure you understand my concern.

I was driving today and I accidently slipped the clutch right out. I know it isn't great for it, but considering it was only once, I doubt I hurt it that much. Thing is, about 10 seconds after that, I could smell that same thing inside the car, and the heat was running with outside air turned on. Think it could be the clutch? In that case, no big deal, just need to buy a new one pretty soon.

Thank you.

P.S. I had posted in Evo General at first and it was moved here. Sorry mods, my fault. I actually didn't notice the newbie forum.

Only 15 seconds??? That's not enough really. If you're really rallying on it, you should give it a couple minutes running under no load to allow the oil to circulate and cool the turbo.

If I've been boosting really hard, and I come home, I idle it around the complex before I put it in the garage, and still let it run a little bit before I shut it down.

Burning the clutch sucks. Low mileage though, so unless the previous owner beat the hell out of it, the clutch should still be okay.

Electrochromatic Glass i.e. - smart glass. Changes colors, tint, intensity, whatever you might want, depending on the technology used. Modern vehicles use it in auto-dimming rear view mirrors (the one thing I miss from my truck T_T). What about it?

Covering liscense plates with it to allow myself to black out my liscense plate at any time. I'm sure this isn't the right place to talk about it though.

Js06- i'll take that into consideration from here on out, thanks
