Advice for turbo noob

The list of cars Ive owned is as follows:
1979 Chevy Luv (ran for about 3 months)
1986 Dodge Ram Van (lived in this one, was sad when it got towed. . .for living in it)
1986 Mercury Capri (not even the 5.0)
1982 Dodge Ram Van (from an impound lot)
1986 Ford Escort (from the paper)
1991 Ford Escort (from a lemon lot)
1999 Eclipse GS (from a "We finance E-1 and up, no money down!" lot.)

yeah if I still had them all. . . . . .well Id have a bunch of rusted out blown up cars.
(save for the eclipse GS which on its 3rd engine is doing ok) I've wanted an evo from the first time I saw/heard one scream by me (2003 Ft Gordon GA) but could never afford one.

Anyway I will be deploying to Iraq as a civillian contractor for about a year at 15K/Month, and I will be getting an EVO-X when I come back. Never having drove a turbo, and hearing a few rumors (let it idle when u stop for 60 seconds, don't run it hard while its cold, etc. . . ) I'd realy like to get some input for people who have alot of time behind the wheel of turbo'd cars.

Any and all feedback, reccomendations, put downs on my old cars are welcome. Thank you all

btw I did try a search and it wouldnt let me advance search for some reason and the regular search came up with links to almost every thread on the forum. . .

I owned 12 turbo cars but I am not sure exactly what you want to know. The 60 sec waiting is a very subjective rule, you don't really need to wait 60 seconds everytime, only when you drove the car very hard.

Shyntetic oil is a must, I bought a Dodge Stealth R/T TT 8 years ago which had the turbo oil lines completly clogged from using cheap Wal mart technotric 2000 oil.

Yeah, get ridd of all that junkyard that you have and get yourself a Evo. Seriously dude, you have one of the worst collections of cars I have ever seen. How in the hell did you ended with such collection of cars? On the Evo X no one knows excatly when is going to be launched.

thank you, yeah anything helps, pretend you're back on your first turbo, and think "Man I wish I would have known X" and thats what I need. High five on the 60 second clarification and oil suggestion!

I got the same offer when I got out of the Army. I turn it down because there is know amount of money they could pay me to go back to Iraq. Good luck man, keep a look out and learn how to use a gun fast.

Well, my first turbo car was a Renault Super 5 GT Turbo II "cup " version. The car was carburated and there were not many parts or shops that would especialized on that car.

Now days on the Evo you can just mail in the ECU and get it done safely and cheaper. I then owned a few other turbo cars and abused of the manual boost controller making huges holes in pistons and melting also the pistons like cheese in a hamburguer.

There is no reason to go thorugh the bitter experineces I went thorugh back in the day. Now days if you don't get a decent tuning from a decemt tuner then don't even bother. Save the money for good maintenace routine (Synthetic oil changes) and for a good tuning.

Don't just buy bolt ons and pretend you car is just faster because of the bolt ons, you might ended with a slower car and worst gas mileage. Tuning is paramount.

I couldn't agree any better. There is no money in this world that can compensate for your safety. I am active duty.

Thanx again, great advice. Before I fell for the Evo-X I had planned on getting a IX and taking it to vishnu (did some reading). With the X it looks like Ill be stock for a while untill the mod's start coming, and become more reliable. From what Ive read on a few other threads, generally the ECU is the first thing I want to get done? The X will most likely be my daily driver and I dont want to go "How high can I get the boost" and blow it up. A nice middle ground is my goal. I hope Vishnu picks up the 4B11T

hook me up with the 15g a month job. cant be any more dangerous than driving a simi thrue chicago and LA all the time.
take it easy driving it at first. u dont want that boost to creep up on u during a turn. till u get used to the lag. and um save money for tickets cops like to pull us over even when we arent doing anything wrong.

^5. I totally understand, and convincing my mom and GF was tough, but everyone has a price, and having been there before with no incidents I figured it like this. I was in the Army for 4 years, and spent 2 of those OCONUS (Iraq, South Korea). And taking this job where Ill be for the most part in a bay, Ill make more this year than I did the 4 years I was in, by a long shot. I do appreciate the concern, and will continue to post n stuff while Im over there, and when I come back, Ill be sportin the Evo X and a nice portfolio

My eclipse (pictured in the photoshop forum, and needs help) gets me pulled over in Rocklin, CA all the time. I was only home for 2 months before I took this job and got pulled over 3 times to "look under the hood". I guess coz it looks "ricerish" (like I said I need help) they assumed it was fast and had mods. I was embarassed to pop the hood and show them the eBay Strut bar and CAI lol.

from Sacramento, CA. Never paid MUCH attention to it b4 but I think 91 is the highest at most gas stations. HOPEFULLY I'm wrong. Anyone else from nor-cal know where to get "the good stuff?"
