Why didn't you buy the STI?
Look I am shopping for the car. Really want to buy an Evo.
Just to give another "kid on the block" a chance I wanted to ask you guys why didn't you buy a Subaru STI? I am sure there is a minority of people on this forum who thought of getting an STI before ending up in an EVO. I know you all love your cars and I DO realize I am on the EVO forum, so no flames please.
I plan to do a lot of track events. I believe EVO RS is one of those few cars you can drive onto the race track straight from the showroom floor. (maybe upgrading tires and brake pads and brake fluid).
I think STI:
a). Heavier
b). Lazy Steering
c). Softer Suspension
d). Less balanced chassis
e). not as sophisticate center diff
What else? If you hate the STIs I guess now is the time. I really appriciate your input.
Thank you!

Many people on this forum that owns a Evo also wishes that they could drive a STI and I am the first one to admit it, if someone does not admit that I don't believe it.
Most of us knows that we chose the evo for a lead advantage on handling, steering and the ability to make power for much less other than that the STI is a very close rival and almost matches the performance of the Evos on stock trim.
The STI is not much heavier than the Evo and the AWD system is not less sophisticated than the one on the Evo either. The suspension on the stis are very good also, in fact in the last few road test it was very very close to the performance of the Evos in fact I believe it had better slalom times and higher trap on the 200 slalom as well.

I thought about buying an sti before i got my evo and ive driven both but i really liked the evo much better i dont know why but its much more fun to drive and the handling is so much better the sti is a great car as well but didnt compare to the evo...but you really have to drive them to know
I wouldn't mind one bit driving a STi if the Evo did not exist. I've always wanted the Evo since the Evo V and I had the opportunity to get myself a car from this legendary line. The only reason I didn't get the STi is because of personal preference and the fact the Evo costs less to break 300whp than the STi.
Sti
I spent weeks researching magazines and forums on both the EVO and STi. I was ready to pull my hair out because I couldn't decide.
So I walk into the White Bear Lake, Minnesota, Subaru Dealership. The sales staff wouldn't even acknowledge me. The lazy, ignorant sales staff sat on their butts and didn't offer any assistance. Terrible customer service.
So I go to the Mitsu dealership and the salesman hands me the keys after 20 minutes. That's why they earned my business. I couldn't see spending 33k on an STI when I could buy my brand new EVO RS for 25,700.
In the end, I have no regrets. I made the correct decision.

Thank you guys for the replys!
Those were some pretty honest opinions. The two cars are very similar in performance and cost. I know for sure that STI would be better to drive around town 2.5 vs. 2.0 that's no brainer, but I think my main aim would be at open track. I guess properly tuned STi can be as fast as EVO and vice versa.
I have a feeling it will all come down to the money and friendliness of dealers. However, everyone states that EVO has sharper turn-in and more aggressive handling, which will be a huge plus in my decision making process.
And even motionless EVO does look like it's going to hurt you, especially MR with those roof spikes.

When I was deciding it was beteen the Evo, STi and a Mazda Speed6. I actually made an appointment to check out the Mazda, then STi and the Evo was gonna be my last stop for the day. I spent the entire night before reading reviews and thinking on it, and the morning of I decided to blow off my appointments at the Mazda and Subaru dealership and went straight to Mitsubishi.
Besides the reviews my desicion was based on past experiences with 2nd and 3rd Gen eclipses I'd owned in the past (loved them), the looks, and finally the test drive. Once I pulled out of the dealership during the test drive I knew it was the right choice, not too mention the short trip on the interstate during the test drive. When I hit the gas pedal while going 80 mph and the turbo starting spooling and me, my wife and the salesman got whiplashed back against the seat, I looked at my wife and said "So how do you like my new car?". We pulled back into the dealership and the deal was done 15 mins later.
I doubt you'd be disappointed with either car, especially if it will be your first turbo. Just do the research and weigh the pros and cons of both. I've only seen a few STi's around where I live and 1 was being driven by an old lady. I was still driving my truck at the time or else I would have seen if you was up for a race.

I had a WRX (not STi) with some mods, like installing an up-pipe what a joke, so kinda been there done that... I test drove 3 05' STi's and 3 05' evo's... I made my choice based on which one pulled hardest stock, which was the rs, and when it comes time to mod the evo will be so much easier/ cheaper... I still like subies but if I got one again I would get a TR and drop 10g on cobb mods.
