Help Please -- Rattle behind dash

Well I started getting my first rattle on my IX and it is really awful. It sounds as if an empty aluminum can is bouncing against something metal (maybe firewall ??) near the center AC ducts. Has anyone experienced this? The noise occurs when closing the door, accelerating, and/or decelerating. Any suggestions?

How can I get access to this area? I wanted to take off the center part of the dash, but don't have the bolt diagrams and did not want to just start taking things off...Thanks in advance...

Edit / Update -- OK I found the rattle cause...Turns out it was the "Smart Tag" (I know ironic) banging against the windshield...problem is fixed

check the how to section for detailed info on removing parts of the dash. As for your rattle don't know anthing about it, there are like 1 million possibilities. good luck though.

you can try removing the cd player, it's only 6 screws to get behind there. maybe you can find a loose piece or drive around without the dash and reach around in there to find the rattle.

A lot of people have thought they had a rattle in the dash, but it turned out to be the downpipe hitting a cross brace under the car. Check that first is my suggestion.

Thanks -- Rattle Solved :)

Hey guys -- Well I found the mysterious rattle ....It was my "Smart Tag" (ironic I know)....The Smart Tag was hanging from just one velcro patch and would rattle against the windshield when accelerating / decelaerating / closing the door...

As always -- Thanks for all of the help...

I had a rattle when I bought my VIII. I took the bottom of the dash or w/e apart and there are two pieces of metal that bolt right to eachother. They were loose.

my evo ix has a million rattles and only 2800miles so far. I have resorted to just turning the radio up like I used to do in my winter beater.

Also what the H is a smart tag?

My IX has some really annoying rattles too and it only has about 6800 miles. The door rattles whenever moving and Mitsu has tried to fix it three times. The radio relocation pod rattles a little bit every now and then. The newest and most worrying one is anytime I start moving from a stop there is a metal on metal rattle sound coming from around the passenger side firewall. It only makes that sound in first gear from a stop. Otherwise I never hear that same rattle. Anyone with an idea on this one?

Man, my EVO IX has rattles since like 1k miles. I just learned to live with it i guess. I have about 4 different ones comming from my dash and one annoying one from the outside (a squeek).
Over the weekend I installed a poly front motor mount and WOW, I have about 7 rattles from the dash now and the outside squeek really got "enhanced". Maybe one day I will take the dash apart and zip tie bunch of stuff together.

Mine has 6k & rattles like crazy. I took it to the dealership 3 times with no fix. It stems from the pass. side dash. The driver side now rattles almost as well. Im pretty sure its the clips for the wires that line the top part of the dash, closest to the window.

Why does a 30K car rattle? Bad enginneering or is the car that stiff?
