Another Insurance Question

Okay here's the deal, someone asked me this because she just bought a new s2k (i'm not into those ) but she wanted to ask me if it is okay for someone else to get the insurance for her, but the title of the car will be under her father's name and the insurance would come from one of her brothers (she has her older car insured with him). Is that doable (legal)? or do you have to do a title change because that would be a mess of paper work.

I'm pretty dang sure the title of the car needs to be in the insurer's name even if they aren't the primary driver. Someone else with more extended legal experience may have to chime in.

If you want a quick call to any insurance agent would verify that in about oh 2 or 3 minutes.

tell your friend she should not have bought an expensive sports car if she needs to rely on someone elses good driving record to insure it.

yeah, I told her not to buy a car at all, I would have given her my beat up civic, but what can I do, she's crazy and has a new job so she just did what she wanted for so long. She LOVES the s2k and everything so once her car broke down, she went and bought it.

well if the car's title is going to be under her father's name, why dont she jus have her father insure the car or instead of her father being on the title she can put 1 of her brothers on the title and insure it that way.

That wouldn't slide at most places, unless you're lying to them of course. The insured needs to have a financial responsibility to insure the vehicle.

In other words--you can only insure the vehicle if it's registered in your name. There are grey areas though. For example if you own the car but you're letting your brother have care, custody, and control, than most companies will tell you to have your brother insure it (even though it goes against the financial responsibility bit).

What this chick is doing is pretty much "wrong". And if the insurance company finds out they are going to remove the vehicle from the current insured's policy and tell them to have the actual person caring for the vehicle (or the owner) to insure it.

Glad to have been of service. I work at USAA so I'm all about trying to improve the image of Insurance.

It's not all bad--especially when you get paid out after suffering a catastrophic loss that would normally take years to recover from had you not had the insurance.

I do think that people who are financially capable of self-insuring should not be required to have any insurance--for the rest of us it's a necessary evil in our month to month expenses. Such is life.
