Getting an Evo - some Questions

First of all, since this is my first post, I'd like to say hello to everyone, and thank in advance for all the help, and I'm sorry if I sound n00bish

Anyway, I may be in the market for a new car very soon... aaaaand.... I'm thinking about getting an Evo . And there isn't really antyhing that I'd like (I used to prefer the STi's but the new body style sucks IMO). Anyway, I've been looking at the trims and I'm trying to decide if the MR is really worth that 3000 extra than the SE? What's your take and/or recommendation?

I know it depends on the dealership, but I was wondering what kindof deals did you guys get on your evo's? What APR? Is that college graduate program worth looking into? I'm just wondering on what I can expect.

I may do some bolt on mods later on (intake, bov, exhaust - nothing crazy), which are the brands/models recommended for ease of installation good performance gains? And how's the warranty on the car with such things?

Thanks for the answers, I'm sure I'll have more questions as I go along.

Don't be a dufus like me. If you want the MR get the MR and if I could do it again I would get the MR SE.

Good luck.

I think MR SE foes for $33 and some change at South Coast and Company. You cna have your local dealer match it.

Or get the SE and get a BR 350 added.

How come? There isn't a lot of difference between the SE and the MR. The MR has the 6-speed, the Bilsteins, some trim pieces, and a few add-ons that can be installed post-purchase if one wishes, as can the Bilsteins. The 6-speed doesn't offer any significant advantages over the 5-speed, either. Somehow I doubt that the MR's dubiously earned street cred would influence your decision.

I got the MR instead of the regular EVO and I regret it. I bought the EVO for the performance aspect and after it is all said and done, the MR is really no different than the other models. The BBS rims are nice....but other than that, the car is not $3,000 better than the other models. The suspension stuff....I don't even notice the difference. At the time, the only car you could graphite gray was the MR. That is not the case now. The real kicker is it turns out the 6 speed is weaker than the five speed.

So you will spend more money for really the same car....when you could use the $3,000 to mod your car.

Hmmmmm.

You don't say!

The 6 speed is what I reall ymiss, perharps not from a technical perspective, but from a have-it-all perspective.

But don't mind me Guys. If I had bought the MR SE Iwould be singing the I-shoulda-bought-the IXSE tune

Seriously you can just slap the 6speed in? What about computer stuff?

The RS would be ideal, I totally agree....if it came in more colors than red and white

No offense to you, I am just not a fan of red or white. If I pay $30,000 for a car, I want more color choices than two.

Hmmm... Thanks for the replays you guys!

From what I've noticed so far, most of you are leaning towards the SE. Which I can understand. If the 5-speed is "sprintier" and stronger as you're suggesting, and the blistein shocks don't really do much (and can be added later anyway). Maybe I'll go with the SE -->Unless more of you will suggest the MR. But I definately want it to be graphite gray

So what kindof deals did you guys get? On mitusbishi's website it says that I can get the SE for about 33K (33,249 + D&H) + whatever options (are any worth it?).

Thanks!

I wouldn't say that, having run both suspensions on my car. The Bilsteins are more compliant, allowing the tires to make better contact with the road on less than perfect surfaces. OTOH, if one is concerned with general handling characteristics, the difference isn't huge. Both setups are fast in the right hands.

Maybe I'll go with the SE -->Unless more of you will suggest the MR.
You're actually considering buying a car based on counting votes on an Internet forum? Say it isn't so!

whatever options (are any worth it?).
I went with an optional gauge package for my SE. It was worth it to me, but I can't say whether it'll be worth it to you.

He he, it's not just like that. . I'm not going to go and tell the dealer that this is the car I want because a guy on the forums told me. Rather, I'm trying to ask an experienced evo drivers, like yourself, if shelling out that 3k is really worth it? I can probably afford both, but I'd like to make it a justified purchase.

You need to decide whether the 6-speed and the Bilsteins, along with the trim pieces, the gauges, etc are worth it for you. It would be easier to offer more relevant comments if you had some specific questions.

If your going racing (roadracing or dragracing) buy the RS. If its for the steet the only reason to get the MR is for the six speed period, you can add everything else later if you want. Now IMO the six speed is much nicer for the street ,closer gears (which equal slightly better performance) and a much better feel

On IXs, 1-4 are almost identical on both gearboxes. There's ~100RPM drop at 60MPH in 6th vs 5th (5-speed) - almost nothing. The 6-speed allows for two gears (5-6) to cover the rage of 5th (5-speed).

Crap guys. I am about to get a used EVO and rejoin the Ranks of the Evolved and now u guys confused me. I was really looking hard for an MR just for the 6 speed. If it isnt worth it should i just buy another 03? Or should I get the 05 for the 10.5? Is the turbo any diff in the IX? Any advice for me too? I had an 03 up until beginning of 05 and loved it. But one night my slightly modded 03 was burned by my friends 05 MR which made me want one of those. But is it the turbo that beat me or is the the transmission? HELP.
