Question New Evo IX + Puffs of Black Smoke = WTF?!

I have a brand new Evo IX MR with less than 1500 miles on it. My friend, while driving behind me, notices one quick puff of black smoke from my exhaust whenever I accelerate hard. He said that it doesn't happen under normal acceleration, only hard ones. I broke in the engine by-the-book. Could this possibly be just some unburnt fuel or perhaps something more serious? My car "seems" to be running great and I have no complaints with the performance, but I just need to know it it's something I should be worried about. Any input would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks in advance!

black would mean fuel... from the factory these cars run rich... you should be more concerned about white or bluish smoke..

Get a test pipe and those short bursts of black smoke can turn to flames

Compltely normal! Every evo does it. Even a perfectely tuned evo will leave a puff of smoke on full acceleration.

I just found out my spark plugs were almost completely closed...apparently they came that way from the factory. It burns a lot less rich now

Hmm. This I may have to try! On my vr-4 if they were gapped too close, they had less blowout but more acceleration. Gap too far, then the blow out would cause bucking. Anybody know off-hand an ideal gap range?

Evo IX plugs are gapped incredibly close on purpose and if you widen the gap you will probably be blowing out your spark and having misfire problems. I think they are supposed to be right around .025
