Brand new EVO IX, 1100 miles, strange problem

Not sure if this is the best area to post this but here it goes..

I just bought an EVO IX a couple weeks ago, I just hit the break in point yesterday. So heading home today, I start to accelerate normally from a light and I hear a pop from the engine bay, and the car starts bucking like a wild horse, but no CEL. Every time I tried to give it a bit of throttle, it would shutter even worse. I limped it off the side of the road. Popped the hood to find that the mesh looking portion of the intake hose that connects directly to the throttle body had popped off!! So I reattach it, found a screw driver, tightened it down as good as I could with what I had, and had my wife drive it home while I followed her closely in her car so I could observe the EVO. On the drive home I noticed every time she got on the gas and shifted, the exhaust was puffing a tiny amount of smoke. When we got about 35 miles down the road, a huge cloud of smoke came billowing out of the exhaust and she pulls off the road. Same thing, intake hose had disconnected itself. I was a mile from home so we drove in her car to get my tool box. I used a ratchet this time to tighten it down as much as reasonably possible, pulled on the hose this time to see if it would pop off, it seemed good to go. I drove the EVO the rest of the way home and had her observe this time. Same deal, it would puff a tiny bit of smoke when I would initially get on the gas. I also feel like the car has lost some power now but that could be a nervous perception deal. My first question is, does the EVO IX typically puff a little bit of smoke bone stock like that? I know they run on the rich side, but still, my WRXs never did that and this is my first EVO, so I am unsure if it is just the nature of the beast. Secondly, is this an issue for anyone else, having your intake hose just spontaneously pop off the throttle body? I'm debating dropping the car at the service dept this coming week.. Thoughts about this issue anyone?

Our nine had the same issue.
IC piping would pop off ALL the time.
Get a good set of T clamps and call it a day.

The smoke was probably caused from a rich condition since all the air was leaking and not getting into the motor but the fuel was. There is an easy fix for the problem, all you need it some T-bolt clamps, theyre available many places and much stronger than the stock clamps. Also, the car might feel slower becaue some air might still be leaking (boost leak). Go get some Tbolt clamps, tighten everything nice and go from there. This has happened before to people.

Or just take it to the dealer!

That happened to me like about 20 times sometimes with mods and others without the mods... That is why i think the evos should come with a "Hard Pipe" KIT rather than the flimsy intake hose..
I am not sure if its indeed called a Hard pipe kit..lol But thats what the kit is called on my previous car (MKIV TT) ..

1. white smoke isn't normal , but the black is
2. the stock hoses are CRAP and the clamps x2!!!! You need t-bolt clamps!!! Do a search under parts #'s and you'll be set

yeah man. Ive got a IX also. My upper intercooler pipe has popped off at the throttle body before... Thats what happens when you are building up 20psi. Thats ALOT of pressure going to the intake. Just keep it real real REAL tight and you shouldn't have any problems.. or you can get T-bolt clamps that wont ever pop off... And about the black smoke thing. That is normal... If i down shift or get on the throttle real hard i may sometimes have a puff of black smoke. This is normal because our cars run REALLY rich from the factory to keep it from detonating. Yous should have no worries as long as you keep your clamps tight.

Thanks everyone for the input. I was getting increadibly annoyed. Especially since I just spent $20 to have the car washed and detailed and the only place to pull off the road was in the dirt.. I am glad to hear I am not the only one with this issue. I talked to the new car sales director just now about this matter. I'll probably have the car looked over by them anyway just to be safe and have it on record.

I believe white smoke is usually associated with something like a bad head gasket, coolent into the cylinders etc...

Don't worry about it man, same thing happened to me and blew it off in the exact same location and I was blowing black smoke from the overly rich condition. I got it real tight now and hasn't blown off since.
