Well you certainly do not want to be under the car doing an oil change with nothing but a jack supporting the car. That's very dangerous.
For oil changes, I would invest $20 in a set of car ramps. They keep the car completely stable and should raise the car up plenty.

i have stands that i will put the front end up on once i jack it up of course. i use the jack on the side frame rails but the front wont lift up enough. also with ramps, then the car will not be level. wont there be a problem with old oil staying in there if the car is not level when you drain it.

You can use the factory jack points, you can use the rear diff, you can use the front cross member, (if you don't have the under panel intact), you can use the lower control arm point just to name a few.

well the drain plug is in the back of the oil pan so even if the front end is up all the oil will still come out. might even be better to have the front end up. i go ahead and do all that, add new oil, and the damn dipstick is impossible to read. looks almost like there is no oil in there. i guess ill check it later. i put just about 4.5 quarts in there to play it safe and ill check it later when i can get a good read on it to see if it needs a little more. i figure 4.5 will be good tho.

oh yeah i also poured new oil into the filter before i screwed it in. i think ill take the car off the ramps and try to get a good read on the dipstick. i want to make sure its accurate before i drive it.

Whatever you do, DO NOT just use a jack, always use ramps or jackstands. Also, DO NOT use the factory jackpoint notches on the sides of the car, unless you like having crumpled rusting sheet metal as your undercarriage. Use the flat area further in from the factory point and use a 2x4 block of wood as a propr so you don't scratch or crush anything.

i said screw it and bought some ramps. nice durable plastic ones with pretty good grip on the surface. car got right up there. made the change easy. oil was so clean i couldnt read the dipstick well after i put more in. i put just over 4.5, figure ill be safe with that and check it in the morning so i can see it better and make sure i dont have to add more.
