Isn't tapping the brakes during a turn a big no no? I'm sure some track day junkies could correct me on this.

Onto tire recommendations. I like the Falken rt615 on the miata and I like them a lot. And a lot of people have these tires on the evo and say they are very close to the advans.

sometimes. there's a concept called the traction circle. A tire has a certain amount of grip it can provide. That grip is available for acceleration, cornering, and braking. In a straight line you can brake very hard without slipping a wheel, but turn at all and you'll fall outside the circle and the wheel will slip. This is what happened to you. You were cornering very hard (a screeching tire indicates that it's at the limits of adhesion). this means that you had no grip left for braking. When you stepped on the brakes you exceeded the grip the tires could provide and almost balled up the car.

Two things to take away from this:
1) A lower performance tire will have less grip and therefore the radius of the circle will be smaller.

2) you screwed up by braking when the tires were already at the limits of adhesion.

Also, it's a 30,xxx car, with gobs of performance for the dollar. Don't scrimp on tires. Put tires on the car that deserve to be there.

...+1...

Give the car what it needs and it will take care of you

Also for all seasons (winter in seattle) I run Pirelli Pzero Nero M+S. Summer/track I run my Falken RT-615.

No car in the history of universe will make you out perform the capability of each tire, regardless of kumho's or thickrubberband.

Evo or Pinto, drive safe dude.

What kind of tires are Kumho 104s? Are those cheap bargain basement tires?

Great post Greggy-poo.

Cheaping out on tires and expecting the handling abilities of the stock Advans is a guaranteed way to create disaster. I run on Micheling Pilot Sport A/S for the winter time (also in Seattle) and I cut back on how hard I drive the car when the winter set is on. The Michelins will run circles around those Kumho 104s and yet I hold back. The stock Advans are some of the best street tires money can buy.

I have BS REO50A pole position,s and absolutely love them. Fantastic in the dry and wet. I thought i had found the perfect tire with my 03 8 in the Michelin PS2, but these are definetely a better tire than the Mich.

I'd second the Bridgestone Potenza RE050s. They are great in the dry AND wet. I know how important that is in Florida since I grew up there.

The Azenis RT-615s are great in the dry, but suck in the wet.
