temp control knob PLS HELP!

hi all,

maybe it's just my car but the temp ctrl knob on my car is really sticky. meaning it doesn't flow from cold to hot or vice versa and you've to give it a couple of go's before you can change the temp. so one morning i was trying to switch the temp and accidentally broke it. any of you know how to fix it? where can i find a replacement knob? PLEASE help, my temp is putting out warm air and the ambient temp is only getting warmer. i'll put up pics in a little bit. thanks for you help in advance.

Do you have an aftermarket headunit? sometimes when people install the headunits the wiring gets behind all the a/c wires and it makes it hard to turn the knob.

OK, this is very simple, don't worry! Look carefully at the attached picture, and follow these instructions:
1. Firmly grasp temp. knob "A" and pull it off. This may be easier than normal because you broke it!
2. Remove vent knob "B" in a similar manner and put it in knob A's previous location.
3. Go drink a beer because you have a functioning temp. knob.

And a broken vent selector knob? Good one.

Definitely a known issue with Mitsubishi, if you have any warranty left, they'll take care of you. I had them do it before my warranty was up, got a new in cabin air filter and a smooth turning temperature knob. They did however make one of the center air knob vents harder to move when they put it all back together. When I took it all apart to replace the dash piece I found it was a cord in the way.

older evos have this problem. there is a tsb kit to fix the problem, but it is a PITA to install from what i have heard

i believe the fix was/is teflon coated cables & a revised slider design

i have an 03 myself & have had this problem. while this isisn't a solution, it may help

if you lay on your back under the steering wheel you can see where the cables from the A/C controls loop back into the heater box, on the heater box there is a slide that rides on a lever, that is used to actuate the flap to switch from hot to cold air... it may not make sense now, but turn the temp control knob while your down there & you'll see what im talking about. use a pick & remove any debris or lint that is clinging to the slide & its groove in the lever. then just use a quit squirt of lube & it should help quite a bit

as for what you broke & how to fix it, i cant really help much there, hopefully you see something on the heater box while down there, post up some pics if you find anything

Same thing happened to me and it's the actual heater box that's broken/sticky. It's an expensive part, like 1200$.

the pics of the broken knob (sorry i'm not so savvy w/the photo editor so i had to paste the pics on a word file). as you can see, the white attachment to the knob is also broken. so it's a problem even if i wanted to take the vent selector knob off and replace it.

thanks for the help guys!

The real cause is a badly designed blend door in the heater box and the fix is a new door. To pull the heater box the dash must come off.

So, you have a choice; get the parts for the first TSB and replace the knob and linkage or go whole hog with the second TSB parts and pull the dash.

For starters, if thinking of doing this yourself, get copies of the TSB's from your local service department.

Oh ya

I Did the same freakin thing. Wish I looked up the cause of the problem before I actually snapped the plastic off the control switch. DOES ANYONE know what part number the control switches are?? I suppose we could replace those switches and then lube the coil behind the dash. I don't know. I hate when these problems happen to numerous people. Mits should let people know about these potetial problems. My sunroof came out of it's track too which I know from the forums that is a constant problem. ERgggg.

If you have this problem but haven't broken the knob....buy the updated sliders that go on the driver's side of the heater box. The cost is about 15 bux. This isn't a complete fix but it will allow the heat control knob to be easier to move meaning it won't break. You must be careful when releasing the clips that hold the cables on the heater box. Screw up the plastic the clips go into and buy a new heater box. You don't want that.

If the knob is broken then you will also need a new heater control panel assembly. .
