Lightbulb What's the purpose of removing the vent??

Here's a question I came up with after going to a few Evo Meets...

What's the purpose of taking the factory vent off of your hood, and leaving everything exposed?

I know it's not weight savings, or you probably would've bought another car.

The car is designed to cool down properly, otherwise there wouldn't be a large hole in the hood.

I still have my factory vent under the grill on my hood. When you take this off of your car, it is just pouring water all over the motor. That's even why Mitsubishi offers a Ralliart version of the vent. (Because it serves a purpose) I also don't like the fact that it shows off the motor at all times. Good sneak preview for thieves. If you removed it because it was starting to show water spots, or oxidation, just paint it with some high temp paint. I used a semi-gloss high temp paint on mine and it looks good (new) to me.

There all kinds of sensors that are exposed, and cause some serious issues over time.

Anything Electrical + Concentrated Water = Eventual Disaster

I guess

But if you have a stainless manifold (like myself) your just asking for water spots that are a pain to remove.

if it's only at meets where you see this, then it is to show what they got without having to pop the hood... kind of like teaser pics, you only get to see a portion... i'm no expert by any means but that's the only logical explanation that i can come up with...

Well the one's I asked if they drove around all of the time like this, and almost all of them said yes.

One told me that the car was used and they bought it like that.

This was just something that I thought was kind of strange, and see if others around the U.S. were doing this as well.

I think its silly also. You just asking for trouble if you go to an automatic car wash or hose your car down for a car wash.

I swapped my vent, mesh, and heatshield over to my CF hood, and i am VERY happy i did it.

Two friends of mine did NOT swap the heatshield or mesh and their clearcoats are cracking like all hell-mine is just fine!

Especially for where i live, i practically NEEDED to keep protection over the engine. The vent (slotted metal piece) not only keeps snow out, but also rain and other debris while both driving and standing still. There is DEFINATELY a lot of heat coming up from the engine, i constantly get the hazey look over the vent (like in a desert), along with EVEN with the heatshield i still have ALL the paint burned off of the vent. Even with the heatshield! I cannot imagine if i did not have the protection~

I took mine off because it started to discolor and I wanted maximum cooling for a track day.

there's no sensors or anything of importance right below it.

If you touch that panel after a good run it gets very hot so removing it will obviously help a good bit with cooling.

People like to change things just to do it sometimes.

There is certainly less water ingestion with the vent on while moving but standing still, I'm not sure that there is much of a difference.

Incidently, I would actually expect there to be better cooling with the vent in place while moving as the air rushing across the louvers should help to pull out additional hot air.

I will have to disagree w/you on that. The cam angle sensor is right the at the front of the block for one thing.

I have had the vent off my car for well over a year. Nothing bad can happen.

All sorts of bad things can happen. Heck, they can happen with the vent on.

I believe removing the vent actually hurts cooling when moving. Think of a convertible or truck bed.... the air goes over the windshield/cab, and then recirculates into back into the area.
