Defiently do it! Its a great turbo. Once you pull out your turbo and compare it to the IX's you'll see its a pretty big difference in size. The 1st thing i said when i poped the hood of an Evo IX was "Damn that turbo is huge!!!"

quicker spool up
smoother boost transition
holds more boost up top
can run 1-2 psi with pump gas.

you will only need the turbo outlet pipe. you can easily bend the other lines.

If you can find a low milage 9 turbo with no shaft play for cheap, then it's worth it. Most of the time, people over-price them and forget they only cost $700 brand new.

If the oil/coolant lines and j-tube is not included, then expect to spend another $100 for that.

Im also wondering would I see any advantage to upgrading pistons, springs, retainers, and anything like that (valvetrain)?

make the transition! with pistons and the works, you'll be making some comfortably big numbers ....look at my sig. i have an Evo 8 with an EvoGreen (all aftermarket bolt ons with HKS 272 i/e cams, 29 psi, and tune) and im 6hp shy of 400hp. but with the internals ill be upgrading to, im pretty sure ill be putting down 400hp+ at the wheels. so with wut your planning on doing, make the right decisions with wut you choose to upgrade your Evo 8 along with your Evo 9 turbo

The 4G63 motor can handle 400 WHP easily on the stock internals. Not all atermarket cams require upgrading the valvesprings and retainers.

It's your money and car, but if I were to purchase a used IX turbo for a decent price, I'd send it into Forced Perormance and have it upgraded to a 20G-LT.

I know that the cams dont require valvetrain work but I wasent sure if it would benefit things or not. I know that the factory valvetrain is good until 7500-7600 rpms and some even say 8000. I know that with the Evo 8 turbo it runs out of stem around 7300 and the 9 turbo im assuming is around 7600 or so. If the valvetrain work is not needed then ill hold off but I was just trying to get some idea. Also EVOclub4 what would the upgraded pistons so for me? (not being smart but thats a question I dont know the answer to)

well, just a few thingz....higher compression ratio, lighter pistons, stronger material, blah blah...the obvious. changing rods can help you rev higher, won't have to worry about connecting rod hardware failure/weakening...but i wouldnt recommend revving higher with stock valvetrain components. i mean hey you can rev it high if you want to but you risk strecthing/weakening something that may be costly later on if in the event it breaks....

a lot of factors with upgrading the internals. just try to keep it simple till you're comfortable with what you have...then go heavy with modding

but yeah with wut sparky said, if you get a 9 turbo, send it to Forced Performance and have them upgrade it. the 9 turbo is rated at 400-425...with the upgraded 9 turbo aka 20g9lt or Evo Green turbo, it'll be rated about 450-475...500 with race gas and a but load of mods and a good tune

Well I will certainly look into the Green Turbo conversion and what do you suggest my first step should be in the valvetrain or piston area?

what kind of racing are you into? This seem's to be a popular choice for the autocross guys. Do fpgreen and you have yourself a fast spooling monster.

But your not sacraficing a THING by going to just the 9 turbo.
- Big turbo = slower spool for top end power.
- Fpgreen = quick spool with big power.
- 9 stock turbo = quicker spool and a car thats great for short sprints. gaining up to 30 whp is a lot! great foundation for other mods.

Im mainly into track racing and the occasional quick sprints til 60 or so, I am really not into the racing going 130 +. I think we all agree on thats not too safe, granted I have done it, I think most of us have but over time you learn. I have all the bolts you can have I think expect for alky or meth. Im looking forward to the 9 turbo or possiblely the Evo Green (dont know if I can wait that long-lol). Its just my 8 turbo is so restrictive its smaller, 9.8 hotside, and the list goes on and on.

You can make the 8 turbo pretty beastly, but the 9 turbo is definatly worth it.

I too will be making this conversion after the winter, I was extremely impressed when I saw some of the guys run with this conversion run.
