Cold shift grind...

Just picked up a new EVO one week ago today... and i've noticed that 3rd gear is always notchy, is this normal?

Also, when the car is cold, when i begin to drive it, I've noticed that sometimes 2nd gear will grind for a split second & then slip right in. It will do this maybe a couple of times until the car is warmed up & once it is warmed up, it doesnt happen again. I would hate to see a synchro already going out... or is this just normal?

are you trying to shift fast when going to second or are you actually trying to get it in second then let out on the clutch?

Normal, I would switch to a better fluid Like Redline or BG Syncroshift.

If it is an audible grind then I would take it in but if it is just feel "Notchy" their is nothing to worry about yet and get the fluids changed at around 1K Miles.

This is a used '03 model with 22k miles. I am not shifting 'fast' like im racing or anything... but just casual shifting... clutch in, shift (not real audible, more just the grind feeling in the stick itself) ... clutch out. Only happens first thing in the mornings & sometimes it doesnt happen it all.

Redline MTF work well? Thinking about getting it changed perhaps Thursday.

Most are running Redline MT90 or BG Syncroshift, yes it will help with the notchy feel.

from what ive read the best tranny oil out there is the factory diaqueen stuff.

as far as notchy goes, make sure you fully depress your clutch before trying to change gears.. if are shifting somewhat fast you might not have the clutch fully engaged when doing the change. but from what ive read alot of people dont have butter smooth shifting through all gears anyhow. a little notchyness would seem fine to me, but grinding is a different story.
