ARP Headstud question...

Hey guys, i've done some searching and nothing really seems to be a definite answer... but i guess that is because this is an opinionated question.

I just picked up some Cams for my IX. They are the GSC S1's, not requiring valvetrain upgrade. I understand that swapping out headstuds is precautionary but do you guys think it would be necessary ? I track the car at the dragstrip occasionally running roughly about 26 lbs of boost or so on race gas. otherwise 22 to 23 DD. Do you guys think that its absolutely necessary to install head studs when doing cams ? How much of an *** pain is it to get the stock studs off ? TIA.

I dont care, but you're going to get dinged for not searching...anyhow...I've heard anything over 24+ PSI for boost is cause for headstuds....long-sustained boosts at that and higher will stretch the stock studs

If you didnt read... i did search, and all there seems to be is a bunch of different arguements as to why people think they are needed or they dont think they are... i was hoping somebody would give me a good solid fact based opinion. Such as anything over 24 the stock studs stretch... is this proven ? or just something you've heard ?

I have never heard stock studs stretching (if it happened, please put link). At this point for you, you do not need them. 30+ yeah, but not 23 and occasional 26.

search! There's like a 5 or 6 page thread that was going on in here as recently as 2 or 3 days ago.

Of course they are not hard to install, the trick is to install them correctly. I hope you have good instructions, but I have been searching for a while and there is no write up on the "correct" way to do it. This may help you: http://www.4g63t.net/2005_FSM/GR00001500-11B.pdf

Good luck.

good decision getting the studs, maybe you'll never need them but now you won't have to worry about it anymore.

I ran 24psi on mine daily since I bought it without issue. I just put in the HKS 280's and went ahead and did the studs because I'm going with the EVOgreen turbo soon and might want to experiment with more pressure.

To PROPERLY install headsteads involves a lot more than swapping cams. The short cut of replacing 1 stud at a time tends to cause the head gasket to leak.

To do it right you need to pull the head, replace the gasket. Having oil leak down the side of your block is a pita... to have it catch fire is down right ugly.
