Real Noob Here
Hey everyone, been lurking the forum for about a week now, researching Evo's in general and everything. I am beginning to like this car more and more as I research, and I thought I'd introduce myself.
My short story, I dont currently have an Evo, but am considering getting one in the future. I'm currently 18 and going to college, and right now drive a '95 GMC 1500 truck that was given to me by my father in high school because he had gotten a new one, and I was in need of a vehicle. The truck has treated me considerably well, considering the lack of maintenence my father performed on it...something I'm finding more and more common among people. Well, the truck gets anywhere from 12-15 MPG, and it will be going to my younger brother who will drive it to the highschool. I've been looking at cars, and want something that isnt quite a gas guzzler, but I still want the "get-up" and go in it, and possibly develop a passion for the engine side of things.
As of right now, I'm not too informed as to engine mods, and all of that, hell, I pretty much just change the oil now. I do know about audio and all of that, and did extensive research before installing one in my truck along with a new alternator, and cables from the battery to alt, grounds, and back to the amps, along with all other components of the system.
I am sure that once I am able to purchase one, I will be interested in engine mods and such...after driving the car for a while first and getting used to it of course...The problem is, I would have no clue where to start. I dont need a track car, nor have the money for it. Things like Exhaust and stuff I will probably want to change. I'm hoping to slowly accumulate mods for the engine in hopes to not only increase performance and get a better feel for the vehicle and its components, but also for the learning experience as I go.
First question would be if anyone has any valuble info for me, pretty much on basics, and all of that? I'm not asking for a long post explaining everything, thats a lot of time typing. Links are fine, and I'm willing to start reading.
Second would be what sort of stuff would the fellow members here recommend I do with the vehicle first? Like I said earlier, I have no clue where to start, other than getting a basic feel for the vehicle.
And Lastly, about purchasing one. I'm currently up in the Central Valley, in CA. Nearest Evo's as of right now seem to be down south, at dealerships down there, such as South Coast Mitsubishi (Recalling from memory, I believe thats the name). I was wondering what everyone thought about purchasing Used Vs. New. Its going to take a lot for me to even buy used, since I've been looking lately and it seems like most of them go for 20,000 and up. I havnt' found anything locally yet, and am not sure that I will anytime soon. I'm not sure about financing, or if I will just try to save up and pay cash for one...That intrest on a loan is something I can't quite justify as of right now.
Anyways, I guess thats enough for now, I get to wake up at 3:30 for work tommorow, so I shouldnt even be up right now, haha.
I'd like to thank in advance anyone that has taken the time to read this "rant" as I've noticed that it is getting pretty long, and I am greatful for any advice. I look forward to becoming apart of this community...even if it may take me a while to actually get one! haha.

i can sorta answer the question on what to do with the car when you get it...first off if its new...put some miles on it...test the car and test yourself...dont overdo...get a feel for the car...when you are ready for mods go with a drop in filter, a turbo-back exhaust (tbe), and a tune...that should keep you happy. then later on you can move up to the bigger mods...full turbo upgrade, cams, etc...hope this helps...
oh and 4 of my friends own evos and mannnnn when you get in the driver seat you begin to feel invincible. haha i know it sounds corny but im a HUGE evo fan and thats the rush i get when i get in and drive off. you'll enjoy the attention too. lol...well im off too...gotta get some sleep.

well hey looks like you got your mind made up.. took me two years to save up for one and it was worth every penny.
As far as first mods the above post stated some truth. start with a TBE and a good tune. open up the airways, with a TBE you can go ahead and throw in a FMIC with intake and of course replace the LICP and UICP. REMEMBER do this after your break in. there are two break in periods. one is around 500 miles from the factory, another is YOU. when you have felt everything the car has to offer and begin to learn it thats when you can move to those mods. after all the restrictive mods (intake, TBE, FMIC) then you can go further later down the road.
howstuffworks.com thats a good website. go there and learn about how engines, turbos and cars in general work. after you learn that deciding on mods should be easier for you.
good luck and welcome to the community

best car you could ever own. ive built a few different fast cars in the past, however the evo is probably the best handling, fastest, and best looking car out there today. very little modifications and you will have more power than you need. ive had mine now for about 2 months and ill tell you what...its an addiction. everyday im ordering something new, or changing something around. cant stop spending all my money. eventually want to push around 500 horse and daily drive it. hopefully real soon.
Thanks a lot for the replies and info.
Any sorta order that I should apply these upgrades, or is it more of a matter of personal choice? I guess I would just want to do the most critical mods first on the motor.
Also a little more on financing something like that. I have never financed anything, so dont know too much about it. Would it be better to go through like a bank with a loan, or just the car dealership? I'm not sure that I have the patience or the time to save up 20k for a vehicle especially with school starting soon, and a lack of available hours to work.
Thanks
