thinking about an Evo....

Well guys I've been tossing ideas through my head and while I'm not in the position for a new car any time soon I always like to examine the posibilities. I was wondering what a decent price for a used Evo 8 or 9 would be and also what are some problem areas? Is there anything I can do to improve motor torque down low without touching boost or sacrificing mpg?
TIA

Is there anything I need to look for? As in problem areas or things that break easily?

The drivetrain is the biggest point of interest by far. Ask for service records etc.

I heard that tranny strength is another area of concern. What should I do as far as making sure that the tranny wont crap out?

Nothing really. As with all used cars you just have to hope its in good condition. Also change all the fluids once you get it. If the seller changed all fluids themselves service records would be non existant. You should drive it to see if it shifts ok and the clutch is good.

What about running synthetic fluids such as Royal Purple in the tranny, oil, transfer case, and differentials? Is this a good idea?

Some people swear by these fluids some people hate them.

If your not racing I don't see the point honestly, you could just stick to OEM. My personal preference falls to amsoil products.

I tend to beat up my vehicles so I think that the synthetics would help. Also, the summers in Houston are really hot and humid so I was curious if the synthetics would offer some help. When I say beat up, this doesn't include launch, racing from a dig, bouncing off of rev limiters, or any of that bull****.
