Aftermarket clutch not good idea?

My stock clutch is going on out me now.. Im dealing with the slippage, but its just not fun driving around without boost and I'm fairly sure I only have 2 weeks or so before I can't drive it anymore. I took my car into the dealership today after going back to stock, and talk to my service manager. I was orignally only there to get new syncros for 3-5th gear, new brakes, alignment, and oil. But I asked if they installed aftermarket clutches, and told them to tell me when they do the syncros to check the flywheel (I had planned on buying aftermarket clutch and installing it at my local evo shop) But the service manager proceeded to tell me that would be the worst possible choice. Basically comming out admiting the stock clutches are ****, unless you drive like a grandma, and that he would install an aftermarket one, but he would put disclaimers all over voiding many warranteed items. Specifcally the transmission.

He said the stock clutch had a lot of give to pressure, and that was the main reason decided to use it. He said if I upgraded to an aftermarket, it was 100%, just a matter of when I would ruin the transmission (i forget exactly what part he said would breal) Costing $6,000 to replace not under warranty with aftermarket clutch. I had never heard of this before, never read about it on here, and I assume many people get rid of the stocker, it is just so unbearable to drive with... But I don't have $6,000 at any point in time to throw in the car, so I decided to just have the stocker replaced.. SO much for getting a my exedy.. But I just want to know if theres any truth to this..I kinda figured there was, it make sense since the aftermarket clutches are stronger and they wont give to much pressure, forcing all the pressure straight to the tranny, of course this is if your racing.. Which I do like to hit the street races / track on weekends, but for this reason he said I would deff. Break it just matter of time.. SO anyone heard of this happening? I want to know I made the right choice haha. IM still pissed i didnt put my exedy in..

You basically paid for a band aid when you could have got stitches.

i know, this clutch will last another 10,000 miles if im lucky, then i have to pay out another $1200 to get it replaced. But I figured I drive ~11k a year, so thats about $1200 on clutches/flywheels a year, better than $6000 and not even being able to drive it

LOL.. the dealership just tells you anything to get your bussiness... if they sold aftermarket clutches like southcoast mitsubishi does.. they will tell you to get an after market clutch....

do a search about how many people have broken their trannys and how much it cost to fix them... dont go to the dealer find a reputable shop .. ur in so cal.. theres tons of them...

quit bending over for dealerships.. they only know how to sell...

yea im actually located in vegas now haha, i figured they were selling me that ****. THey get more business out of me if I come in once a year to replace the damn clutch and flywheel then I would if I got an aftermarket one and never came back. bleh. but the thought of it happening would force me to sell the car if It were to happen, something I dont/cant want to do. so I had to go with "their" reccomendation

IMHO, the restrictor pill in the clutch line is the culprit. I have driven my car the EXACT same way for 63K miles. The stock clutch went out at 14K so I put in an ACT, SS clutch line and took out the restrictor pill. ~ 50K miles later it still shifts just as hard as day one (or whenever it was broken in of course). The first time I shifted hard with the ACT in I thought I left my rear axle in the middle of the street. I strongly recommend the HD ACT set up, very practical and it stands up to abuse like a champ. One thing that most don't like is the firm pedal, I test drove a stock IX and almost put my foot through the firewall trying to disengage the clutch!

Your gonna be replacing that thing really fast, you should have gotten the Exedy. The stocker just isnt built to support even a stock motor at all.

He is right though about voiding warranties... thats if they know its in there.....
Get a local shop (You Trust) to put the clutch in and if something crazy happens by beating the tranny then have them take it out and go back to Mitsu and try to get warranty

I have the Exedy twin and I have ZERO problems! It takes the abuse and keeps on goin

the restrictor pill is pure evil. you either bog, or slip the clutch so bad it burns it up.

removing it doesn't do any damage, its the bad launch that does the damage, taking out your poor transfer case

thats the whole point of it, it takes away all the drive train shock, by burning up your clutch.
remove it, and you're removing the safety net.

All this clutch talk is the only thing that worries me about buying a IX this winter. I'll have a tax return around the same time, so I "could" replace the clutch should anything go wrong with it, but I cant afford $600-800 every 12-18 months on clutches. Do most that change their clutch to an aftermarket one only do it once?

Aftermarket clutchs last well if you dont over abuse them and if you break them in properly. I know someone running an Exedy twin on a 2.3 & 35r daily driver, clutch has been in the car for a year and a half. I havent heard of any drivetrain problems yet, and his car has seen the track a good bit.

Go ACT HS and be happy! You will like it.
