Evo Reliability
Evo Reliability
How reliable is the evo? I have a s2k now that i am trying to get rid of and get a evo and it will b my DD. I live in michigan so the AWD will be nice for winter. Just wanted to know if its gonna cost alot to keep up and if im gonna have a ton of problems with one once i get it.
if you race or drive hard which you probably will, you can look forward to a clutch ~ 10-15k miles. could be shorter. Usually service every 3kmiles, filters oil. Tires ~ 8k or less. All of this above deppends on your driving. I use mine as a DD and I race sometimes at the street races, I've spent well over $3,000 and its been not even a year yet.
oh wow... i prolly wouldnt race a ton prolly 2 times a month. im not that aggressive of a drive but i do like to have a little fun here and there. I just miss awd and have boost. two things my s doesnt offer and to boost is easily 5g worth upgrades.
Evo is a great DD. I agree you proably will need a new clutch cause the stocker sucks goat ballz. Replace it with an ACT and you will be a happy camper. I replaced my stocker at 15K with another stock one, that started to go so I put in the ACT at 22K and I am now at 93K without any issues and 330whp and a whole lot of agressive driving. Good luck!
As far as reliability, I bought my car 1yr old w/13k on the clock. That was 3 1/2 yrs ago and it now has almost 53k on it. I've had no major issues with the car, I'm still on the stock clutch and it grabs fine. No transfer case issues or tranny. The one thing I will say is that these cars ARE expensive to maintain, much more so than a honda.

If you use good oil (amsoil) and proper filters (oem mitsu, maybe mobile1) those add up quickly. (3k for agressive driving, 5k for light duty, $70 with those products)
Trans, transfer case, rear diff oil $300 to change at 30k miles (15k hard cycle) if using non-mitsu fluids/techs.
If you are trying to stay on the stock A046 Advans they will start in the snow but you have no control or ability to stop. Don't drive on them in the snow unless you are looking for an accident. They are definitley summer only and only last 10-15k Miles. $250 a tire if you want to stay on them, but if you aren't a track monkey there are plenty of tires that will be just about as good but not as expenisve (or short lived).
Its expensive to maintain relative to most dummy-slow cars, but its not *THAT* expensive if you treat it right
. People burning out their clutches in less than 30k miles are either tracking every weekend with alot of passes or doing something VERY wrong.

How much is it exactly to do the ACT clutch? The only thing shying me away from an EVO is worrying about the clutch/transfer case/tranny issues. Replacing a clutch is no big deal, but multiple problems will ruin my life.

I used to bounce my S2000 off of the 9K Limiter all day long. No issues what so ever. Not even a clutch. I drove it hard. My first Evo motor lasted 45000 miles (rod knock), the second 25000 miles (rod knock), and the third a little over 3500 miles (rod knock).
Plus the S2000 + 2" drop + Work Meister S1 3PC = OMG
Needless to say, I wish I still had my S2000. I'll trade you if youd like
