thinking of mods

I want to put some mods on my 03 Evo now that the warranty is expired, but I want to retain as much reliability as possible. It's my daily driver, and I only drive it on the street. As far as I can tell, I want to get:
1. MBC-probably a Hallman
2. 3" TBE- there doesn't seem to be any one that is outstanding from another
3. K+N drop in filter
4. Hi-flow cat
5. 255 fuel pump
6. boost gauge

My questions are:
1. Lower Intercooler pipe upgrade- is it worth it?
2. Cams-too much hassle or are they worth it?
3. Intake and manifold-would they really help with daily driving?
4. porting the turbo and head-does it make that much more power?

I'm trying to avoid spending $700 to get an extra 15 hp. I have more questions, but still searching to see if I can get answers that I need. Thanks for the replies.

1) Really.. no but its pretty cheap and the boost does appear to hit just a tad harder

2) Cams are certainly worth it no easier bolt on horsepower far as i'm concerned minus the side effect of a slightly erratic idle depending on how large of a cam you choose.

3) In a word.. no

4) Flow is everything for power while your probably not going to see a GREAT deal of benefit from a stock turbo on a ported head and turbo what you do gain is a percentage gain over stock meaning the gains don't drop off as you get a bigger turbo the flow increase in percentage is still there. Far as I'm concerned building the head comes second to building the bottom end I'd much rather take a head off twice then replace my block.

just curious. i'm fairly new to evo's but why would you need to build the bottom end on a cast iron block with forged internals? kinda seems like beatin a dead horse...

1) Bottom end horsepower limit starts to get sketchy beyond 450whp

2) Bottom end means high rev limits assuming you get valve springs to handle this

I suppose if you never want to go beyond 400whp and stick with mostly stock like setups then not building the bottom end with ever be an issue. For my personal build its just a matter of security plus i plan on getting a stroker kit when possible to increase the drivability of higher horsepower turbo's in the setup later on.

So keeping under 400 hp (probably no higher than 320 with the mods I'm thinking of), I could keep the stock turbo, injectors, intake, and exhaust and still be in good shape (getting few if any hp gains) without throwing away a lot of money?

Would a tune on a dyno be good or would getting flashed yield pretty much the same results? Is there a general concensus on who is the best at flashing?

As long as you stay out of the high boost game then your probably going to be fine on a stock bottom end but results of course vary just watch yourself if you start to tiptoe past the magical 450whp mark.

A Dyno tune is better than just a flash you get from some guy unless that said tuner is going to spend the time with you doing an equivalent road tune.

Best tuner? Your not going to find solid advice from a question like that its too loaded. After all you'd have to be the best tuner and have a huge range of experience with other people's tuning methods to have even an idea who is the "best".

Frankly I've heard good things about Mellon people's reviews of him appear to be very satisfied which probably means he'll work hard to make your car run as well as it can. Good luck choosing I have no real recommendations as of this date

as far as cams go i did 264's in my car to maintain easy drive ability in traffic, they dont get a lumpy idle really and the car seems to rev up just as easy as the stockers. Good way to add alittle extra hp

ported stuff improves tq alot.......freeing up the most air as possible will produce more power especially in conjunction with fuel mods. the more air you can bring in the more fuel as well.

depending on your goals makes the types of parts you should get at a certain time. get the supporting mods and then go from there

add a mr bov to your list and start with that, you will likely be more than happy with just those mods if you enjoy the car stock...

I was under the impression that porting helped the top end much more than the bottom end. I spend most of my time under 5k rpm, so I'm focusing on low/mid changes that will help everyday driving, and/or fuel mileage. I don't want to get into tuning and such, that seems to be a lot of hassle for not much return. I don't want to spend hours and hours wrenching and changing maps, that just isn't for me.

The tune is the most important "mod" or change you can do to a car. It makes the money you spent on parts worth it for both safety and power reasons. If your car is completely stock now, get a full exhaust, intake, mbc, and a tune and see if that is where you would like to be. There are many good tuners all around, just make sure you research someone's experience's and don't just take the tuners word.

deadpirate: I am not sure if that will void your warranty, but mitsubishi likes to blacklist cars for seeing them at track events (and I think we have all seen Mitsubishi and Subaru reps at track days taking down vin numbers), and i have known cars to be out of warranty because of an intake. Warranties are great if they will cover you, so it depends on if you want it or not.
