Question?
figure 200$ for every 10K you finance. MY insurance is cheap through USAA at 98 a month (0$$ deductibles) but can go from 100 to 400 a month depending on your record. As far as maintenance...gas is a Biotch, synthetic fluids are $$$ and if you tune...well you gotta pay to play. I make about 48K a year in the military. More now though.
Seriously; Get quotes for the car & insurance first, then see where that fits into your current budget. If it doesn't work out, it'll be easier to shop around for another car than to shop around for a higher paying job. Don't live and work for your car.

Two things:
1) Obligatory "If you have to ask, you can't afford it."
2) Depends on your other financial commitments.
I budget about $750/month for my car (payments, insurance, maintenance, etc).

It depends on what your other expenses are. Do you have a mortgage, credit cards, etc? That is a factor. You could be making peanuts, but have no expenses and it wouldn't be a huge deal to own the car. You could get insurance for ~105/month. That is what mine is...and I pay $380/month for the financing, but I throw an additional $100 on top of that to pay it down quicker.
As mentioned above by akunochi , fluids/gas/maintenance can take a bite out of the wallet. Mods and tuning can put a serious beat-down on cash flow as well...

Is it worth it to be broke even though the evo is such a great car? Because from what I understand the base lancer is just not worth doing heavy modifying.

The car is a hobbie in itself, an expensive one at that too.
I gave up a lot of other stuff I like to have it, which I miss. But I love my car too!
It's a choice, not a child. haha
No. I would not recommend if you are going to be broke with a hot car.
Wait a few years until you have all your financial ducks in a row, then buy something badass. Evos are nice, but in a few years the Camaro and Challenger will be out...and who knows...maybe the EVI XI will be lighter and faster than the X.

LOL... well, I personally am breaking even in college with it. I don't consider myself to be broke, but it eats most of my money, and I don't do anything at all to it. Only Oil, and cheapest/reliable replacement parts when needed.

I don't personally see the point in being broke because of a car but that's a decision you need to make for yourself. I enjoy having plenty of money left over every month to go out and have some fun or buy whatever I want.
ok, totally off topic, but ambystom01, your countryman Georges St. Pierre is fighting Matt Hughes again this weekend. Can't wait to see it, and I am hoping GSP knocks Hughes out....sorry for digressing "and now back to our regularly scheduled post"...
