Is an evo for me????

Ok well right now my old car(an acclaim) is in the shop for its inspection and will most likely fail inspection so after the inspection i was planning on buying an evo IX. I was wondering though about some basic things with the evo IX like gas millage, if it is a good Daily Driver, power, safety, handleing, and what are some normal problems that evo's have. And i understand this is probably placed a thousand other places on this website but it is alot easy for newer people to just have the info all in one thread. Thanks
W.W.J.D.

Evos are Awesome daily drivers, almost every person with n evo, daily drives it. Safety, althou its not a high start crash rating evo holds up pretty well in crashes (i know i totaled my first one lol). Handling is unmatched by almost any other car, handling in evo is just.. beautiful.

To be honest if its daily driven, lightly modded, evos dont really have any common problems. Maybe besides the clutch not being the best (pretty sure its basically a lancer clutch). Also stock tires dont exactly last as long as youd expect, but they are high performance tires.

Well, I think that we can get you going into the right direction. I will number down the page for oranizational purposes.

Is an evo for you? That is only for you to figure out,...good luck finding a dealer that will let you sample some candy, but I know that there are dealers that keepsome old VIII's around just for the sample rides. These evol's will more than likely get the point across to you as far as the "feel of the car". That is at least the casual feel. Anyhow, back to the subject...

1) Gas Mileage = I get about 190 - 230 to the tank in the city, boosing around here and there, it averages out to this nunmber. I do not run my evo hard, I treat it well and get on it when neccesary, but not often. On the highway, between 60-75 mph, I can get about 300 - 380 per tank depending on conditions, quality of gas, how many fools i have to blow by, etc, etc. I do think that in optimal conditions I have gotton more than 400 miles to the tank, toppes off, fresh tune up and no heavy foot involved. It was also rather cold out which means better mileage period whether NA or boosted. Mind you I also run 21 PSI all the time, every gear, every day,...so if you are stock, expect possible better mileage. I am optimized for fuel in my tune though I am sure.

2) Great as a daily driver, safe (if you keep it from running into a tree or jersey wall),....Its AWD foor crying out loud. The most dangerous part of these cars are the dumb asses that drive them.

3) The evo's that i have owned (2 to this day) have had no problems, what so ever,...except a small issue with the sunroof in my VIII. Other than that, they are extremely reliable.

4) You can find a lot of info by searching these forums and asking the right questions. Some advice, enjoy the car, learn about them as you go, do your research, save your money and spen it wisely on these bad boys. Stay sensible and reasonable while maintaining as much gains as possible. Enjoy and dont tun it out in every gear, although it can handle it, its a big investment and a priveledge to be responsible with. you will be joining a unique collection on owners and enthusiests. You have been warned!! cya.....

Lancer clutch? lol

The clutch and tire wear depends on the driver. All the people you hear about their clutch and/or tires only lasting 10k miles or less are crappy drivers or run their cars hard all the time. ie, launching repeatedly, tracking w/ extreme camber, etc.

An Evo is a damn near race car. The power and handling will be there like no other car in its price range. But you will sacrifice gas mileage, luxury, and insurance (very expensive). If you're all about performance and don't really care about its interior and other fancy things you'd see in a bmw, get the Evo.

Ya, its covered in other threads. Best start reading in the newbie forum. And these threads rarely work because there is just so much is dependent on the user. But here we go -

Power/Handling:
http://www.modernracer.com/mitsubishilancerevo9.html

Gas:
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.htm

(But 20-24...over in the MPG mod area looks like the IX can get some more after some tuning adjustments...doesnt seem to work with the 8...)

Safety:
Sure - thats really a driver issue. Or other bad drivers. But car passed US standards.

Problems:
Clutch (and its not from a Lancer) but was engineered to be the weakest link in the drivetrain.

Insurance is high.

And whatever you can break

keep in mind that you must fill it with 93 every time, no exceptions!! Calculate this into your budget when thinking about the economics of keeping it on the road.

Another suggestion,...dont get rid of your beater car after you purchase the evo. insure your beater with the minumun coverage, bust list it as your daily driver and you evo (full coverage if you are smart about protecting your investment) as a weekend driver that is garaged (hopefully you live in a suburban paradise with no crime as compared to the hood somewhere). This will keep your insurance down with the multi car catagory, I bet you will pay less to insure both than just your evo alone. Also, just use some discretion and drive your beater car as often as possible (just pimp the evo when neccesary and keep the value in it.) Good example, i bought a used VIII w 9k miles for $22,500. I drove it for just shy of 37K and ended up selling it for $21,700 (totally stock upon sell aside from tint and 3m on the front). So if you keeo the miles low while still enjoying it, you will keeo the resale value high and like I did, you can make money on the sale (I made over 6k b/c I payed ahead on the loan and got all the money back minus the 800.00 dollars or so.

goo luck

No! Only put premium. Stay away from those mom and pop gas stations also because they tend to be watered down. Chevron, 76, or Shell premium is what's proven and recommended.

87 will work but it'll run like crap.

This post is making me lmao!!!!
First: Many of us have now payed off our evos and don't daily drive them anymore.
Second: Good to know you already totaled one evo... thanks for adding to the
insurance on these cars.
Third: Evo's don't have any common problems(how about high maintenance?)
Fourth: We have a lancer clutch...wtf????

WOW.....just WOW! I am speechless.

BTW...stock clutch can last a long time if your not beating on it. Look at the power in my sig. and I am rocking the stocker with 47,XXX on mine.
