Beginners Read Me: New To Your Evo Or Looking For An Evo?
Modifications aren't a big deal for reliability unless they're really crazy and poorly tuned. Unfortunately theres no real way to know the history of the car in that regard so with all things there is risk involved. Despite having to rebuild the entire engine I still wouldn't have it any other way.
What your goal of the car? 300 whp? 500 whp? DD or track?
5 speed - for heavy mods
6 speed - for medium mods
Try to look for a stock evo. If you can't, ask them about their tuners, who installed their parts, etc.
I have a Evo 9 MR - 6 speed and its pretty modded. Its a great DD but there's a few things I personally don't like about the car. No cruise control, bad mpg, bov fluttering in highway driving, terrible turn radius, tires wear like crazy and expensive for upkeep.

Its hard when you are buying a new car thsts been used. I bought my evo 9 with 65k miles on it and spun a bearing literally second day I had it. Turned out the motor was built wrong. I would look for a somewhat stock car like mentioned above
I feel you on that bro. I bought a clean *** 06 ix mr with 50k miles and have dumped 10k into it just to get it right. Then I had an axle break and need a steering colum 2 days after getting the car together. Unless you can afford a new evo dont buy one. Id recommend a 1g tsi or gsx. You can make EXTREME horsepower for a fraction of the cost of an evo. Just my 2 cents. Thats what I wish I had done.
GT-a version?
to ask a few question to another GT-a owner but since USA never got earlier models than 03 evo 8 there are not many here.
They are getting older, but Evo's hold their value. If they were well taken care of, they are worth more in my eyes. It's hard to come by a clean Evo now a days. When I was looking I would find such haggard cars I couldn't believe people were asking what they were. I personally would never buy a highly modded car, but if that is something you were considering just look at all your options. You don't need to jump into the first one you find and I think that's where most people make their mistake. They think they find a good deal, get into the car and realize that it's more of a headache then it was worth.
I just picked up and evo 9 mr. I literally looked at about 8 Evos before I came across this one and actually drove about 10hrs on a Saturday looking at them. Then another 7hrs on Sunday. It was def worth it though, picked up an 06 mr with only 23k miles completely stock, not even an intake on the car.
