Why would they be jealous? I feel far more satisfaction knowing I'm paying for my car than I did when I was handed my lancer at 17. Would a 17 year old me say no to an evo? Of course not, but an 8 year old wouldn't say no to McDonalds and ice cream for every meal but that doesn't mean it's good for them. Everyone is simply stating their opinion regarding young people and fast cars. Do I care about him? Of course not, I don't know him and wouldn't notice if he died but that doesn't mean I'm going to go against my moral compass and suggest he do something that could well harm him and/or other people.

If your mature then go for it. I got my evo at 16 and i haven't had an accident or gotten a ticket in over 2 years. Its the driver not the car.
