HIDs for the IX GSR

Do I need to replace any housing in the headlight assembly for HIDs? or do I just need to buy the xenon bulb and ballast and its good to go?

Yup that's all you need. HIDS heat up at a lower temp than regular halogen bulbs so you'll be fine.

second that. I was in the same situation, wish I opted for HIDs from start but dealer optioned $1k extra... no way! Not too difficult to install yourself...don't pay anyone unless its a six pack for someone with skills locally

......Anyway, Get your self a HID kit with the correct base on the bulbs, wire up the ballast and your good to go. A better option, but way more expensive, would be to get either JDM or USDM factory HID housings with an HID kit. That way you get fogs, correct beam pattern (USDM), and if your creative enough, you can even wire up the headlight levelers. The local harbor freight even sells an HID kit. Good luck.

I have heard (on other vehicles) that the light pattern for HID vs conventional lights is way different. That just sticking HID bulbs into a normal housing is not the greatest idea. Is this true with an evo? I would like to upgrade to HIDs in my IX gsr, but i want to do it purely for better night visiblity not just for the "HID look." Will just putting ballasts and bulbs into my current housings give me better visibility (speaking in terms of 4000k OEM type HID kits).

Its not quite as bad with an EVO since the non HID housings seem to also have a beam cut-off. Not like the ricers that blind the hell out of you in your rear view. You will get better visibility from the brighter light but you might get "high beamed" a few times from other drivers. Same thing goes for the JDM housings to a lesser extent. IMO, the best bet are the MR/SE USDM HID housings. Slap in a good kit (Not a harbor freight one) in your stock housings and call it a day. Our stock halogens suck

you don't need to change the housing. just get a new HID kit and you all set. your bulbs for the GSR is 9006 and 6000k is the best on. don't go to blue like 8000k cops will get you for that.

Too true. I had a non-HID Evo then an Evo IX SE, it was a WORLD of a difference, but you won't know that until you drive a car with HIDs.
