Do I have a coolant leak...grrr.

Recently removed/replaced my radiator. Filled it runs good, no issues. I topped the overflow bottle off for the next two days keeping it at the full line. I drove it a litle yesterday, checked the bottle this morning and it is perfectly halfway between full and low again!! Does the bottle expel some to get to that point? I checked everywhere for a leak, all is good, whats the deal? The only things I disconnected were the upper/lower rad pipes, the petcock to drain, and the overflow-lid. I do not recall it ever being at full before the change. That was it's first radiator change car is brand new.

What does your coolant overflow tank level out to?

Thanks

(oh yeah, the oil looks fine too, no coolant in there.)

I believe this is pretty normal. With mine, I saw the coolant was a bit low as well, so I added some more coolant. However, after driving the car then letting it sit for a couple of hours, I noticed that the coolant was above the full mark.

as the name states it's an over flow tank, you should not be adding fluid to it

Yeah I get that, but ultimately it fills the radiator. I was worried if the radiator has a leak and it is pulling some from the overflow every so often then eventually it would run dry.

I should clarify,
The car sits for 24 hours, fluids are at full.
I drive around for about 2-3 hours, come home.
The next morning, I am half between full/low. (car is cold)
So I top it off,
Same thing happens.

I checked for leaks, none, unless it is leaking only when there is pressure or it is running. Im going to mark the tank at its "half" point it likes so much, and drive it around today to see if it goes lower. Good idea?

No issues other than the level, oil is good, no overheating, all is well.

^While I appreciate the link, and it is semi-valid. My issue is not with coolant expansion, and the "noobie" comment I find ironic. (Did I spell "noobie" correctly? I am not particularly fluent in 20 year old).
Thanks.

My problem is that the coolant overflow tank decreases about 1oz. every day for the past 4 days, a little bit much to be simple expansion issues. I pressurized the system today and found a leak in the petcock for the radiator, replaced, we will see if it works now.

There was in fact coolant in the oil, head gasket allowed a water jacket to leak through. Caught it very early. Not sure what caused it, as the car has never been driven hard and has like 4k miles.... Oh well. Fixed now.

Thanks everyone

How was it fixed - milled head and new head gasket?

1. Replace your radiator cap, its probably failing
2. Dont tell me you went to autozone and got one of those "quick seal" deals and poured it down your radiator Its an Evo! not a ford taurus!

This worries me... Did you replace the head gasket?? If the oil is milky at all (oil and coolant mixture), then you should definitely replace the head gasket..

The block was checked for tolerances, it did not need to be honed/milled. The only thing I buy from autozone is spraypaint and the occasional can of pb blaster. I would never try to fix-a-flat my coolant system lol. Everything is fine now, it was only the head-gasket. The old gasket was very thin near the water jacket seperation part. We are guessing it was a manufacturers defect. Too late for warranty work now though lol.

Thanks everyone.

The advice concerning the radiator cap is good although maybe not for a car with
4k miles. I have a radiator cap tester, not a piece of equipment most people own, and my OEM radiator cap was toast at 30k. So my advice is, whenever you replace your antifreeze, replace the radiator cap too.
