from scooby to newbie

hello everyone.

As it goes right now im in the process of selling my WRX and moving to the EVO world. On my way to picking up a WW VIII, can't wait.

Aside from that i would like to know the do's and dont's of evo modding. There is many of these in the subaru world so i was just wondering if you guys have any.

thanks in advance for any advice.

Most of the subie rules apply:

No VTA BOV's
Tune if you plan on using a cone filter
Invest in fuel delivery
Exhaust is always your first step.

Where we differ is usually because unlike a subie the cams are right there for the upgrading. Also the Turbo is within easy reach so thats cake to do as well. I've even heard of people dropping in pistons with the motor still in the engine bay..

I will be the first to say tune for everything. EcuFlash, Evoscan (or Mitsulogger), tactrix cables, are all your friends.

Only if you never plan to upgrade the stock turbo. If you plan to move into something bigger down the road...go with an 8 vs. 9.

I would say get a IX if you dont plan on throwing in a bigger turbo. but if you plan on it, get a 8.

my bad chu. i just completly read over thats.

about the tranny's, one of you said there kind of hit or miss. now i've heard about this before i just never what exactly is there weakness? i know for subarus the gears on the wrx are a bit on the skinny side and once you get past 300whp on that tranny they become a ticking time bomb.

I'm not very sure of the tranny problems, but also be aware of the TC "death whines" when buying used. Really test drive the car before you out the money on it.

The Evo transmission is pretty stout its the open transfer case on the 03-04 Evo's besides the RS with its limited slip helical that had issues with hard take off's. The transfer cases have also proved to be somewhat of a weak spot once horsepower really goes up.

The death whine is a sign you've fractured or chipped the gears.
