The Evo transmission is pretty stout its the open transfer case on the 03-04 Evo's besides the RS with its limited slip helical that had issues with hard take off's. The transfer cases have also proved to be somewhat of a weak spot once horsepower really goes up.
The death whine is a sign you've fractured or chipped the gears.
