Odds of problems with VIII or IX MR?

I am considering any EVO however would it be a bad idea to scoff up an MR if it where the right price? I hear they are prone to have more problems regarding trans/tcase/clutch and other things than EVO's with the 5 speed. I'd rather steer clear if it will spare me headaches but if they are solid, if not better than non-MR than I'd consider it but personally I don't really see much in the MR that is so much greater than a regular VIII or IX unless I am missing something.

People say OH it has the 6 speed, and OH the billsteins... but then the car doesn't even turn a faster lap or handle particularly better so what the hell does it matter if it has billsteins right? Unless they are not so jarring? What is it?

The bilsteins do ride better but if you think its a waste of money getting an mr then don't get one. simple as that. Also the general belief is that if your planning on doing some serious mods down the line or take it to the track often, then the 5spd is for you. I choose the 6spd because I drive a LOT and I'm not doing any crazy mods.

there are a LOT of different threads on this if you do a search...
I dont see how there would be more tcase or clutch issues with the MR... and unless you road race or slap on a big turbo you arent really more likely to have tranny issues than the 5 speed... both trannys can have problems, just run the proper fluids and take care or them. If it blows you can buy a built 5 speed tranny for just over 3K that will be better than the stock 5 speed. Seriously though, there is a wealth of information on the tranny issues, as well as the differences between MR and GSR models, so do some searching as well as put some thoght into what you will be using the car for (street/drag/road racing/keeping it mostly stock or modding everything under the sun).

I am not speaking of spending EXTRA money on an MR but I am seeing some MR's at the same price level of other EVO's.

I bought an 8MR a month ago knowing I wasn't going to get into any performance mods at least until the Warranty is done if at all. It seems the general consensus is that the stock 5 spd can handle more power than the 6 spd. If you are buying to mod avoid the 6sp and use that extra money that would have went to the MR for upgrades.

Well I think if I got myself an MR I would be doing basic bolt ons. TBE, Flash, Cams, MBC... nothing big. Stock turbo too.

What kind of power is too much for the 6 speed.

Is the MR ride that much better than the non-MR. Still handling just as well without being so CH CH Ch Ch chattery and *** whopping?

Get the MR man, it is better to have the 6th gear, and oh is it so nice to know you have 6 gears of ***-kicking speed. The 6speed will hold up the power just fine with standard bolt-ons.

Trust me the mr will hold 500whp no problem just depend's on how you drive if your an idiot slaming the gear's racing your self and power shifing as hard as you can in 4th gear.the problem is 4th people say that it's easy to shatter but i never seen this happen and i know a couple of people who are making 400's to 550whp with no problem's.Don't get me wroung the 5spd is diffently stronger but the 6sp isn't weak either, i personaly have on mr i like better reason's are quicker rev's cause of the closer gear's,hwy crusing, and the 6sp look's nicer, not for noting but the 5spd setup look's cheap like honda civic.
