Civic owner here with some questions..

I currently have a 2005 Civic Si and am looking into getting an EVO IX. I have lots of research to do.

First off, I wanted to see how my si would do against a stock evo, and so I was asking my friend if he wanted to run. But he was telling me he didn't want to run from a dig because he's seen some videos of stock evos breaking axles and having their clutch go bad from launches.

I told him not to worry and they just probably didn't know how to drive, and that they wouldn't make a car with that much power with crappy clutch/axles. Can anyone confirm if the stock clutch/axles are an issue during launches for STOCK evos?

Thanks! OH, and here's my EP!

axels should be fine if his car is mostly stock...clutch can go bad if you don't know how to drive or launch...or do too much launching...as with anything the more HP you put down things start to break...stock vs stock the eVo should win...

nice...well if he can actualy drive youll be murdered... but an evo is a very hard car to drive the way it should be...it takes time to get the launch perfect.. it was way easier for me to launch my somewhat stock evo than my set-up now... but he will not break his axles stock... i havent seen anyone break any axles till they have soem pretty good power.

If you dont know the correct evo launching technique you can expect to break out the wallet. I revved mine to about 5k and dumped the clutch the first time I tried to launch. Needless to say, I smelled my clutch the entire way home. I replaced my fried clutch and after breaking it in (and learning more about the 2 step) I have been getting some pretty hard launches. I didn't do my research, and I paid for it. Luckily it was my clutch that gave out and not my transfer case.

Oh sorry, I forgot to add that I'm swapped with tsx motor and supercharged. 306whp and 225ft-lb tq. So I'm really curious how I'll do, but I have to convince him first that his clutch and axles will hold up fine lol.

Clutches, yes. Axels, not so much.

The stock clutch won't hold up to too much hard launching. If you launch imporperly, you can damage anything in the drivetrain. You're not going to break the car with one launch. Not even a couple launches. It's repeated times at the track which gets to the car. Same as any car, but with any AWD, it's takes a little more finess.

There are some nice launch techniques in the driving technique section, but again it all depends on your set-up, and what he mods are done to the car. But you did mention "STOCK".

I did "hear" (not sure how true this is) that Mitsubishi purposly made the stock clutches a little on the weak side, so when people do drive hard and launch the cars the stock clutch will most likely be the first thing to beak.

Sick looking EP, though. Fun cars

With the much power vs. a stock Evo, you will should walk all over him.

Good advice. I'll look into this and make sure my friend knows what he's doing.

You will win for sure if he is stock, and has no launching experience at all (which I expect with his concern)

I figure I would on a roll, but not so much on a dig (which is what I'm curious to see).

an evo is very mod friendly, like over 300whp with bolt ons. Gas is better on that lil EP3 tho. Stock for stock, evo has it.

Well, you have around 40 more WHP and weigh 600-700lbs less? I can't see how you'd have any question which is faster unless your car really doesn't have 300whp.

If your buddy thinks Evos break axles when stock, then he has no clue about anything and likely hasn't a clue how to drive his Evo, so your FWD would not even be a deterrent. We can't break axles until 500whp or so.
