how much slower is an X then a IX
Agreed. I'm getting just as tired of seeing these 'can I afford it?' threads as I was of the 'bmw >< evo' threads.
It's funny though, I'll give them that much. The idea of someone with a job that pays 30-40K thinking that a car of the same price is in their range is hilarious. I bet we see a lot of sale threads in about a year of people trying to do everything they can to get out of the payment.

As far as I know all A stock, STU, BSP, SM, and FP evos at nationals and ProSolo where VIIIs and IXs. You gotta check your facts before stating something misleading to fellow members.
Now, Scca road racing national was a different story since a X dominated and broke the existing record in one of the classes. The reason for this I believe is the allowed modifications and execptional driving of the X owner. The CT9A still remains the platform to have for motorsports untill the Xs starts to prove otherwise.
This type of thread is tiresome (X vs. IX vs. VIII), but I will say that the X is plenty good at SCCA Autocross -- where driver is likely more important than car to being successful.
I am DEFINITELY a newbie driver and have been keeping up & beating IX and VIIIs in the autocrosses here. Of course, most of those drivers aren't national champions either.
OP: $15-$17 per hour = you need something about 1/2 the purchase cost and 1/4 the maintenance cost of an evo. That works out to $30-34k a year... which is the same cost as a X!
I tell people that if they like their IX, there is no reason to trade into a X unless they like the look/creature comforts better. The VIII and IX are very capable cars, cheaper to own, cheaper to mod and are a well sorted out platform. I just think they don't look as good

listen, its not 1986 when choices were limited - now the auto market is flooded with choices! japanese, german, even americans are coming through with great cars.
the whole point of an EVO was that u can get an exotic car performance for a fraction of the price. EVO's (and cars like lotus's and porsche's of the past) are harsh, loud, rough, and interiors are rental-cheap, but hey, u still get those looks on every corner, and u can take out a vette.
but if that wild performance aspect is gone, and its softer, and its quieter, and its heavier, and its slower.... then just go get a bmw 3 series for the same price as an X !

get evo 9! comparing the Evo X to the Evo IX is like comparing the fat Anna Nicole Smith to the skinny Anna Nicole Smith....the X is heavier and not as good looking and the IX is lighter and way way more sexier!!! haha
YES!!! u got it right!! the X is less ricey and more grown up, but if thats what you want, then why get an EVO at all?????? thats what all those $30-40k acura's, bmw's, infinitis, lexus's, and now even cars like dodge challengers are for.

3 series would cost way more with same options.
Look how slow the X is....

^ yes i read the article. OK so the X can keep up with the IX over a 4.2mile course. agreed. ok, but what about every-day driving? what about 1/4 mile ET? the X is a lot slower according to all magazines. Mitsu added 5hp, yet 400 lb of weight - gee i wonder how it affects every day street driving and usability?
and EVEN assuming that all performance stayed the same (which it didnt), the MSRP rose like crazy! so whats the point now ?? why own a $40,000 mitsubishi ??
AND what do you mean no one else offers AWD and turbo????? what about Audi A4??? what about 335i ?? even saab Turbo X is a decent car now.
the bottom line is if you can pay $40k + for an Evo X MR, then you might as well pay $40k + for a 335i
