Seriously considering getting rid of my 05 VF34 WRX for an EVO 8

I was originally looking at EVOs before I got my WRX but I just couldn't afford the EVOs. Everywhere I looked EVO 8s were still in the mid 20s but I've noticed that they've been dropping in price. I'm looking at an 05 EVO 8 for $20,000 with 31,xxx miles on the clock right now. I'm waiting for a carfax report from the dealer and if all checks out I'd honestly consider getting rid of the WRX for the EVO.

Now before I go off and buy one, is there anything I should be aware of before jumping on the EVO ship? Pros and cons? I've been searching around the forum and have found A LOT about mods but not as much info pertaining to reliability, are EVOs decent when it comes to reliability? I'm not the kind of person who floors the car everywhere I go and I tend to baby my cars so that's always a plus. Thank you for any help in advance.

EDIT:Forgot to ask this question as well. Say the EVO turns out to be stock with a clean record, how much should I be looking to pay? Any haggling room?

Just look for signs of previous modding. If the mods were installed and put back to stock improperly, you will have to spend some time diagnosing the problem. So generally, the less mods, the better. Check to see how the driveline is as well...ie clutch engagement, shifting and such. Other than that, you shouldn't be afraid of jumping in.

I'm getting quite excited about this whole thing. As much fun as I've had with my WRX the fact of the matter is (and same goes for the STi) the EVO is just a better bang for your buck. I hope everything works out.

Not necessarily.

A LARGE percentage of EVO owners mod their cars. I bought my evo modded and I don't have any problems with it.

As long as you get it checked out by someone who knows what to look for (compression test and such) you'll be ok. I wouldn't not buy an evo because it's had a couple mods.

Honestly, pending what mods are on the car if any, I'll still consider it. If it has a turboback and tune, I won't be bothered, hell, even if there's an MBC and cams on I still wouldn't care. I just wouldn't really look at one if it was heavily modded. To me, basic bolt ons are nothing to be really scared of.

If it's still on the stock clutch, that should tell you something. Mine was bought modded, but the stock clutch is still perfect so I figured he couldn't have beat on it too bad, and I had it checked out by a mechanic, and carfax, then flew to pick it up a few days later...

been non stop happiness ever since.

Wow you didn't even test drive yours? That's some serious trust right there. I've been considering tracking down an EVO from a distance as I've found some decent ones that are 500+ miles away.

hey man i just saw this thread and its funny you mentioned that. i just parted out my 2005 vf34 wrx because i was unhappy with the power i was getting...and should be getting an evo in the next week or two! good luck with the sale...the kid is buying my car for 16k with cobb turboback, invidia uppipe, accessport and intake. im going to have a total of like 18200 so hopefully i can find an evo 8 and start modding right away! it wont take much for it to be faster the my wrx. probably just an intake will do it lol.
