is an 03 bad???
i no this might be a stupid question, but whats the HVAC, and kind of problems would that cause?
HVAC = Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning unit. Basically the cables just get dry or bent and it gets very difficult to turn the knobs. Some people even break their hvac controls and it costs like $200 for the part to replace it.
03's aren't bad if they are taken care of. Only thing wrong with mine is the ring gear broke (all evos are prone to this when launched a lot) and took out my tcase. Otherwise I have 56k miles on it and it's still going strong!
so an 03 inst really bad, cause its not the first year techniclly... but he wants to put a 05 8 or 06 9 turbo and cumputer in it. cause you wont be able to tell. besides power. lol. anything else that should be replaced besides those things. oh and a clutch, hes gonna buy a clutch too. anything else he should buy, like stuff thats not good on an 03 or parts that are easily broken on the 8 that dont break on later models or anything. thanks for the quik replys guys

looks like my evo :P lol, i've had no problems with mine, i've only had it for like 3.5k miles though, (80,000 total) its pretty much stock, the only minor irritation i have with it is the notchy tranny, coming from my silky smooth civic to this is kinda hard to get used to, i've read a couple things to do to try and fix it but havent gotten around to trying. like someone else said i'd check on that lemon buy back thing, if its not to bad that one hell of a deal, i bought mine with 77k on it for 15.7, i talked him down from 16.5
The only things I want that the later Evo's have in the front LSD and bigger stock turbo. I bought my '03 used with 61k. I've put about 16k on it since then and it's treated me pretty well. Sure there have been issues, but nothing that isn't tolerable or expected.
It means u have a certain amount of days to bring it back if someting craps out on the car. We have that in MA here :-p
And if you want the evo 9 turbo with the 10.5 hotside id suggest replacing the fuel pump, cuz that is bound to crap out sooner or later and its cheap reassurance that you won't get stuck anywhere

Very doable without a big turbo. And why u want to replace the ECU? Plan on makin over 600whp or somethin?.......
