Grinding 5th gear with 20k miles??
3rd and 5th share the same synchro i believe...not sure...but mine grinds in 5th as well...not all the time if i shift fast enough or let the rpm's drop it doesnt grind...
i emailed John Shephard at shep racing and he told me it was the synchros...so get it checked out dude

i have this same problem at 27k miles on my 9. I have an aftermarket clutch in because i thought that my clutch was done because this started happening. Do you think the dealer will void my warranty if i bring this in, i need to go there anyway because my srs light came on. I have an intake and catback, coilovers, tuned.

They will probabaly void the warranty, especially when you come in with a broken 6-speed, if you have the 6-speed transmission? My friend never miss shifts but drives at track (not dragstrip), his 6-speed broke down totally when having it in 4th gear and accelerating out of a corner, it broke down at about 25k miles with about 330whp.
Some dealers are fine with cat-backs but take that air intake off, you just loose hp having it
Coilovers shouldn't be a problem if it's transmission problem you have. But the 5-speed takes some serious power to break down. But also my experience of the Evo gearboxes is if you don't shift them right they are just hopeless, grinding gears and hard to get the gears in. Especially the 2nd, but if you take them "on the fly" they go in very smoothly
And don't force the 1st gear in if you don't come to a complete stop first..
Hope it turns out well for both of you..
its a 5 spd and i replaced the TOB when i did the clutch, so i knew right away it wasnt that. I've owned a few evos and this is the first time this happend. Im easy on the tranny when shifting making sure i dont force it in, i kind of guide the gears inplace. Thanks for the warranty info
does anyones trans sound like its grinding when they let off the gas? ive had this problem for about a month now... 4th and 5th feel notchy and while i drive i dont hear anything and the car still pulls hard, but when i let off the accel i hear a grinding noise coming from the trans...

Try using syncromesh.
I changed my fluid to syncromesh at only 600miles on my evo. Had alot of metal junk inside.
After that my shift was smoother and grind was gone.
2 weeks ago I changed my fluid to royal purple. It shifts like crap now and I'm starting to get 5th gear grind..... going back to syncromesh when I have time.
I also let rpm drop or I shift really slow so I dont grind my gears.

yea evo tranny's are junk. the tranny in my 03 had been rebuilt 3 times by the dealer. i actually just installed a built T.R.E. transmission two weeks ago because if im actually gonna keep this car im gonna need it to shift mint
Did you ever get this fixed?
